Summer Additions to the ECPI Approved Certifications List

By Virginia Beach Campus Library Director Rebecca Tabakin

According to a recent article in Network World, “having a broad array of certifications is even more important for giving job-seekers a needed edge.” That’s good news for ECPI students. The latest additions to the ECPI University List of Approved Certifications now include Microsoft technology operating systems certifications 070 series-410, -411, -461, -462, -680 and -685, and Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) exam ID0-571.

Certifications are highly-recommended by both faculty and employers who serve on Advisory Boards. Recommendations are reviewed by the Academic Deans and proposed to the University’s Curriculum Committee on a continual basis throughout the year.

Once approved, certifications are available at deep discounts for students who meet the eligibility requirements. To make certifications even more attractive, a Testing Center is available at most ECPI locations and campus libraries can provide print and eBook format certification study guides.

The current list of ECPI University-approved certifications includes 103 certifications for the School of Business, School of Criminal Justice, and the School of Technology and professional licensure exams in support of the School of Health Science programs.

Faculty members Dr. ViJay Bhuse, Mr. Larry Saccoia, and Mr. Al Portes have earned the highly-coveted Cisco Academy Instructor Trainer certification, and are now authorized to train Cisco Academy Instructors worldwide.

The role of Instructor Trainer is the top teaching and technical role in the Cisco Networking Academy. These trainers are responsible for promoting academic and instructional excellence among Academy Instructors. In order to be designated as an Instructor Trainer, Cisco created a new rigorous qualification process requiring instructors to:

  • Be nominated from a Cisco Authorized Instructor Training Center
  • Achieve and maintain industry certification associated with the Networking Academy curriculum they will be teaching
  • Take and pass a pre-test
  • Pass a two day face-to-face evaluation, scheduled and delivered by a member of the Cisco Technical Advocacy Team.  (This evaluation includes hands-on configuration and troubleshooting, as well as preparing and presenting demo lectures.)

With these three Instructor Trainers, ECPI University is now designated a Cisco Academy Instructor Trainer Center (ITC) as well as a Cisco Academy Support Center (ASC), making it among just a few select locations on the east coast to have achieved this status.

As an ITC, ECPI can now provide training, technical support, and ongoing professional development for (and approve) new instructors. As an ASC, ECPI University is the provider of baseline support and partners with academies to promote a quality student experience, sustainability, and student success.

Employment Partner Named South Carolina Small Business Person of the Year

Leask Headshot LR

The U.S. Small Business Administration has named ECPI University employment partner Noah Leask the 2013 South Carolina Small Business Person of the Year. Leask is president and chief executive officer of ISHPI Information Technologies, Inc., a cyber-defense business that provides counter-terrorism and cyber warfare services to the U.S. intelligence, security and military communities.

Leask, a service-disabled U.S. Navy veteran, and his wife and fellow Navy veteran, Lisa, started the company out of their home in September 2006. A member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Leask called the business ISHPI, a Chippewa word that means “move forward,” which is exactly what he did. By 2008, the company had landed several multi-year defense contracts and closed the year with just under $2 million in revenue.

By the end of 2012, ISHPI had doubled its revenues over the prior year and garnered multiple business honors. The company currently has 109 employees with facilities in Suffolk and Alexandria, Virginia, and San Antonio, Texas in addition to its Mount Pleasant, South Carolina headquarters.

The company is also dedicated to community service. It has four major community service programs: the Exceptional People Program, supporting programs for the developmentally disabled; Warrior Program, providing mentorship services to veterans and active duty service members; Native American Pride Program, offering undergraduate scholarships to members of the Sault Ste. Marie tribe; and the Save Second Base Program, supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
