It happens just three times a year. That’s when every ECPI University campus rolls out the welcome mat for a cavalcade of visitors. “Career Discovery Day is an exciting event because it often marks the first step people take in changing their lives,” says ECPI University Director of Recruitment Chad Samuelson. “We try to create an environment where prospective students can gain meaningful insights into themselves, their potential, and the careers that most interest them.”
At campuses throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, guests were able to see what hands-on education is all about. In ECPI’s mechatronics labs, they saw built-to-scale, working models of advanced manufacturing systems and robotic arms. Those interested in nursing programs saw the amazing technology that powers today’s medical manikins which are used to create life-like learning scenarios for students. A quick look around the home and office is all it takes to see the rapid growth of technology and its incorporation into almost every facet of our lives. From Smartphones with the power of yesteryear’s power-hungry desktop computers; to the Tablet revolution that has all but replaced briefcases in the workplace, any expertise having to do with computers are in high-demand – and it’s a trend that’s projected to grow significantly.
However, the transition to a digital world brings with it almost as many potential pitfalls as it does benefits. Case and point: the major data breach experienced by superstore Target in 2013. Hackers abound who steal financial data, core business ideas, employee information, medical records and anything else stored in a digital medium. For those of you not familiar with the term STEM, it is an acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.” According to the Office of the President of the United States, jobs in STEM-related fields are projected to grow exponentially over the next decade with demand outpacing the number of qualified applicants by one million. Although there can be a substantial commitment to education and training in order to qualify for a STEM position, the pay off can be seen in the expected job growth and earning potential (see below).
So whether you are a high school student getting ready to graduate or you have already graduated and are in the work force but looking to change careers to a more stable or lucrative career field, those who choose a career path in the STEM seem to have a bright future indeed. When Thomas Windley began attending ECPI University in 2004, he had just completed his service in the U.S. Navy. Several months later, he decided he wanted back in, this time in the Army. While attending ECPI University, he was appointed System Administrator for his unit and soon earned his associate’s degree in Network Security in just 18 months.
In 2007, he earned another associate’s degree in electronics engineering technology which led to being promoted over his peers. A year later, he deployed to Afghanistan but kept up his online studies.
Now Staff Sergeant Thomas Windley has earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Science with a concentration in Network Security, as well as CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security + certifications. [Read more...]
