ECPI Graduate Helps Injured Vets Make Transition

ECPI University | Jonathon Singleton donates time and more!Jonathan Singleton has a very important job. Some might say it’s a calling. He helps wounded veterans.  When he’s not working on his bachelor’s degree at the ECPI University Richmond/Moorefield campus, he’s coordinating the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Wounded Veteran Internship Program, a federally funded initiative designed for veterans who are unable to return to a former job due to physical or emotional disabilities.

The program allows veterans to revamp old job skills or develop new ones. VDOT attempts to locate internships close to where the veterans are receiving rehabilitation or living. Jonathan, himself, is a former intern. As a Marine, he was wounded in Iraq during the Battle of Nasiriyah in March 2003. “For me, this is a great chance to pay it forward,” says Jonathan. “This is more than a job. I feel very passionate about serving my fellow vets. Here, we not only help them transition vocationally; we also conduct a variety of workshops to help them with resume writing, interviewing skills, financial management, and post-traumatic stress disorder.” [Read more...]

ECPI University, Northern VA Student Carries on a Family Legacy

ECPI University, Northern VA Student Carries on a Family LegacyBy the time he was a senior in high school, ECPI University student Kristian Foster had already refurbished nine dilapidated computers and created his own network. His love of technology had been nurtured by his grandfather, Arthur, a lifelong IT professional who took his first computer course at ECPI in 1969. When Kristian announced that he too wanted to attend ECPI University, it was welcome news.

Of course, much has changed since Arthur was a student. Back then, ECPI was known as Electronic Computer Programming Institute and it was one of the few schools offering courses in computer programming at the time. “I had already completed two years of school at Virginia State College, but I was still working at a shoe factory,” says Arthur. “Then one day, I saw an IBM display at a shopping center and asked the man from IBM how I could learn how to work with computers and he suggested ECPI.” [Read more...]

A team of three ECPI University students from the Newport News and Virginia Beach campuses has been honored with the “Most Innovative Award” at Dominion Enterprises’ 7th Annual Hackathon, HACKU2. The two-day event held at Dominion Enterprises’ headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia is designed for students to gain real world software development experience by collaborating and designing functional games and apps. This year, teams were tasked with designing and programming working games, or game-themed apps by utilizing nationally recognized API’s as well as some used by Dominion Enterprises itself.

Game and Simulation students Kenneth Crim and Adam Myers and Web Development student Justin Norman developed a new approach to authenticating whether a user is human or not. This has the potential to replace the existing CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computer and Humans Apart) challenge-response test method. This approach utilizes a smiley face and a scroll bar where the user selects a particular smiley face image and find its match on a scroll bar to authenticate that they are not a “bot” – thereby reducing the amount of spam on a web site.
