EXPO Reveals the “Truth” About Manufacturing Jobs | ECPI University | MFGDAY14They came with robots, 3D printers, and advanced machinery of all types. Manufacturers from across Coastal Virginia arrived at ECPI University ready to change some minds. It was all part of a nationwide event called Manufacturing Day Expo, held on October 3. Sponsored by a coalition of professional associations and leading manufacturers, it was one of many such events held simultaneously at cities around the nation, all with one purpose in mind: to dispel the outdated myths associated with manufacturing careers.

“It’s nothing like it used to be,” says ECPI University Virginia Beach Campus President Kevin Paveglio. “People who work in manufacturing operate in a more automated and rewarding environment. They use technical skills to trouble shoot, set-up and program components like robots, automated systems and computers…and they experience very competitive compensation and benefits.” What’s more, according to a recent study by Deloitte Touche, there are an estimated 600,000 technical jobs waiting to be filled throughout the nation…and that number is growing. ECPI University Graduate Takes Online Education into Hometown Classroom

ECPI University | Electronics EngineeringJason Dean is a man who takes the initiative. If he wants to learn how to do something, he opens a book or goes online and teaches himself. He’s spent most of his adult life constructing buildings but would rather be building robots.

When the U.S. military was losing thousands of robots disarming roadside bombs, Jason took it upon himself to design a robot that burned up bomb components using a carbon dioxide laser. Being a basement tinkerer – not a large defense contractor – his idea didn’t make it very far, but he says he got noticed by some important people. So much so, he was invited to Fort Benning, Georgia to present his next idea, a robot that used suction to gently expose buried improvised explosive devices (IED), gently vacuuming away dirt and debris without putting pressure on the bomb. “They loved it,” says Jason. “Once again, however, me being just one person, I couldn’t develop an expensive prototype.” [Read more...]
