The Changes of Fall

Fall is the time of year that traditionally most students return to school. For some of you this may be the case, but for the majority who choose ECPI University for the convenient year-round schedule, fall is just another change in seasons that hopefully finds you closer to your goal of graduation. This year we encourage you to focus more closely on our communities and the holiday season.

At all ECPI campuses, students and staff are engaged in helping the community by finding ways we can give back to those in need. There are many people who, during these difficult economic times, need a helping hand. ECPI University supports many community charities and organizations including: the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, community blood drives, “Christmas Angel Tree“ program, Food Bank, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer, American Heart Association Heart Walks, Diabetes Walks, blood pressure and glucose screenings for diabetes awareness, book drives, Girls Get IT, and many others. Ask about the activities at your campus and join us in helping the community.

Fall has brought other changes at several of our campuses across Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. In Virginia Beach, our first master’s degree students started their program pursuing the Masters of Science in Information Systems. The program, taking less than 15 months, will also be offered online beginning in January 2012. At the school of health science campus in Newport News, Virginia, students started a new associate’s degree program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This program, which can be completed in 18 months, incorporates hands-on clinical training in local hospital and clinical settings, and prepares the student to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers board exam.

Also, three of ECPI University campuses serve as Certified Assessment Centers for the Virginia Manufacturers Association. In October the Innsbrook campus in Richmond, Virginia became the fourth site in the state to provide exclusive industry assessments. Not only do ECPI students benefit, but the entire manufacturing community will be able to make use of this assessment.

Along with change, some things remain constant at ECPI University, and one of those is our commitment to support the military. ECPI University was again honored by G.I. Jobs in its 2012 Military Friendly School list. The ranking honors the top 20 percent of colleges and universities that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. We make every effort to assist military students in getting their degree, including our military distance learning partnerships with every branch of the military and our unique partnership with the Wounded Warrior Program to provide on base training.

As 2011 comes to an end I encourage you to remain persistent in your pursuit of higher education and know that everyone at ECPI University is here to support you in your efforts and goals.

Sincerely,

Mark Dreyfus

Summer 2011 – Message from the President

Whether you are a new student or returning student, we welcome you to the fall semester 2011 at ECPI University.

I want to remind you that everyone at ECPI University is committed to working with you to help you achieve your goals and reach your highest potential. Please make sure you are familiar with the catalog as it contains important information you will need, and know that our administrative staff and faculty are dedicated to helping you. You should always feel free to share your comments on any surveys or end of term critiques. We take your feedback seriously and hope to improve our programs as a result of your suggestions.

As you focus on your studies this fall, reminders about the current economic turmoil are everywhere and with rising unemployment, your education will be more important than ever in determining which opportunities in the employment arena are right for you. Making sure you have current skills is the one goal you can pursue that is only dependent on your motivation.

Throughout this issue of eCONNECT, we are celebrating our graduates – we had a record number this year! Please read their stories and share in their excitement as they begin new careers. I am certain that you will be inspired to follow their example of hard work and dedication so that you too, will be walking on stage to receive your diploma not too long from now.

Most of all, enjoy your time at ECPI University. I look forward to meeting and talking with many of you in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Mark Dreyfus

What Is In a Name?

What is in a name? Everything when you consider if that name properly represents who or what you are. I am proud to announce ECPI’s Board of Trustees decided to change the college name to “ECPI University.” On June 1 ECPI will officially become “ECPI University,” and we will begin a new era and offer a Master of Science in Information Technology.

ECPI is also celebrating our 45th anniversary of providing career-focused, student-centered education. Since our founding, ECPI has been offering students the opportunity to achieve their educational goals in a timely and expedient way. For many students, ECPI provides a second, or perhaps a third chance to complete a college education. With the advancement of technology, the University continues to add virtualization to the curriculum, introduce iPads and use the latest in medical simulation through our updated high fidelity labs. Our goal is to provide more mobility and convenience for students to enhance learning. Attention to student success provides opportunities to develop professional, communication, teamwork, and practical proficiencies through externships and clinical settings. Employers continue to demand graduates with these fundamental skills.

Completing your degree in a timely manner is an essential part of why you chose ECPI. As summer approaches, you may be presented with challenges that appear to be roadblocks in your path toward graduation. Prior to making a decision to take a temporary leave, I urge you contact the University administration and review your options to continue in either hybrid or online classes. Remember any disruption in your education can cause longer delays in achieving your goals.

Let’s make 2011 memorable and please help us celebrate our new university status.

Sincerely,

Mark Dreyfus
