P
icture “Iron Chef” and “The Voice”
all rolled into one. That’s what was
happening at ECPI University’s Culinary
Institute of Virginia (CIV) this spring. To
mark the opening of CIV’s newest location
in Newport News, leaders throughout the
Virginia Peninsula came together to work
with staff and students to create tasty
dishes judged by an audience of about
50 guests. The entire CIV team wishes
to extend a hearty thanks to the guest
chefs who helped make the event a great
success:
• WHRV’s Hearsay Host Cathy Lewis
• Daily Press Food Writer David
Nicholson
• Newport News Economic Development
Director Florence Kingston
• Virginia Peninsula Chamber of
Commerce President & CEO Mike
Kuhns
• Greater Williamsburg Chamber &
Tourism Alliance President & CEO
Karen Riordan
Guest chefs drew their assignments from
a hat – each being tasked to cook fish,
meat, or poultry – using a pre-selected
group of ingredients. After sampling
each dish, audience members voted and
awarded first place to Cathy Lewis’ Asian
Tuna, second place to David Nicholson’s
Scallop BLTs, and third place to Florence
Kingston’s Shrimp Meatballs with Bok
Choy and Cilantro.

Medical Assistants
are on the front
line of medicine,
and talking to
patients and fami-
lies about health
insurance is part
of the job. That’s
why the Affordable
Care Act (ACA) is a now part of the curriculum. Greensboro
students recently debated ACA issues for a class project.
Preparation meant learning about the pros and cons of this
highly-charged topic.
