Our History

Founded in Norfolk, Virginia in 1966, ECPI University has a long history of offering programs that prepare graduates for jobs and careers that are in demand. In fact, ECPI was among the first institutions in the region to offer classes in the growing field of computer programming.

ECPI University has built a strong reputation for helping graduates achieve success and helping our host communities remain competitive with skilled professionals. Here’s a brief look at ECPI University through the years.

1984

ECPI opened its second campus in Richmond, Virginia. (Subsequently, branches opened throughout Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.)

1987

Main campus relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

1992

Began offering degrees in Health Sciences.

1998

Became accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees.

2004

Following reaffirmation of accreditation, ECPI was accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees in computer and information science.

2005

Additional baccalaureate degree programs (Criminal Justice, Nursing and Business Administration) and the use of distance learning technology were approved by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

2006

Program offerings were expanded to include Culinary Science, Dental Assisting, Massage Therapy, Medical Radiography, and Nursing programs.

2011

Attained University status and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer a Master of Science Degree in Information Systems.

2012

ECPI University – Newport News Campus, Northern Virginia Campus, Raleigh Campus, and the University’s main campus in Virginia Beach are independently authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students.

Since 1966, ECPI has provided employment services to over 3,800 different employers, some of which are among America’s largest, including AT & T Government Solutions, Computer Sciences Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Cox Communications, General Dynamics, Verizon, Harris IT, Northrup Grumman, Schlumberger, and Canon Information Technology Services and L-3 Communications. The University’s Career Services Department also provides plenty of assistance to students and employers alike, including help with internships/externships, the job search, on-site interviews and employer orientations.
