Faculty and Students to Serve Meal, Teach Dining Etiquette to Youth at Newport News’ Dochiki Civic and Social Club

Newport News, VA – Students and faculty from the Culinary Institute of Virginia (CIV) will be serving dinner to nearly 100 city youth ages 10 to 18 on Wednesday, March 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Dochiki Civic and Social Club, located at 2705 Chestnut Avenue in Newport News. In addition, they will also deliver a presentation on proper dining etiquette.

“We believe it is very important that our young people develop these skills early on,” says Tom Harmon Chairman of the club’s civic committee. “In years past, these were things you learned around the dinner table at home, but many of our youth come from single parent homes where family dinners are few and far between. Someday, one of these kids may have a job interview over lunch. Knowing how to conduct themselves properly could well affect the outcome.”

Since its founding more than 75 years ago, the Dochiki Civic and Social Club has been actively involved in the Newport News community providing outstanding civic, social and philanthropic leadership to their fellow citizens. The club has raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities, youth programs, and senior citizen projects. It has also strongly encouraged all of its members and fellow citizens in the community to be actively engaged in the electoral process.

Today, the club's membership includes businessmen, educators, elected officials, members of the military and other professionals throughout the community, all of whom are devoted to supporting and improving the Newport News community through active civic engagement.

“The Culinary Institute of Virginia is honored to serve the youth of Newport News,” says CIV Newport News Campus Director Kim Hicks. “Community outreach has always been an important part of our mission. We know great things can happen when people break bread with one another.”
