The History of East Coast Polytechnic Institute
Founded in Norfolk, Virginia in 1966, ECPI University demonstrated early on its commitment to forward-thinking, market-based curriculum, being among the first to offer classes in the growing field of computer programming. As a result of our history in technology, ECPI stands for East Coast Polytechnic Institute.

From that point forward, ECPI University has pursued a path of sustained growth based on addressing the needs of students and employers while playing a key role in the mid-Atlantic’s economic development.
ECPI quickly established a reputation for providing high-quality instruction in certificate and diploma programs, while integrating industry equipment and teaching the computer applications and software most in demand by employers. Classes were small, and faculty had industry experience, academic credentials, and teaching ability. Successful student outcomes, including high graduation rates and program-related employment, were considered of primary importance. These values continue to serve the institution, its students, and graduate
ECPI opened in Norfolk, Virginia with programs in computer progamming and computer science
With the introdution such as new innovations such as fiber optics and bar codes, ECPI adds degree programs in Computer Electronics Technology. ECPI now has a reputation for producing high quality gradutes who are successful in entry- level and can then advance to senior technician and management level positions.
ECPI opened its second campus in Richmond, Virginia. (Subsequently, branches opened throughout Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.)
Main campus relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Began offering degrees in Health Sciences to include nursing , medical assisting and medical administration
Became accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees in the areas of electronic engineering technology, computer science, and information technology, nursing, medical assisting, and medical administration
Following reaffirmation of accreditation, ECPI was accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees.
Additional baccalaureate degree programs and the use of distance learning technology were approved by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Program offerings were expanded to include Culinary Science, Dental Assisting, Medical Radiography and Registered Nursing programs.
Attained University status and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer a Master of Science Degree in Information Systems.
ECPI University – Newport News Campus, Northern Virginia Campus, Raleigh Campus, and the University’s main campus in Virginia Beach are independently authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students
ECPI has maintained a strong relationship with industry and employers. Program advisory boards regularly meet and provide valuable feedback regarding employer needs and industry trends. This feedback often translates into curriculum revisions that add value and help to make ECPI programs more effective. ECPI Universty's core values are in represtented by our name
Since that time, ECPI University has built its reputation as an institution focused on modern curriculum. Because employer’s needs change with the times, ECPI’s leadership has always been mindful of this when designing its programs. University program directors and faculty members have maintained valuable relationships with industry professionals to ensure the University meets the needs of both graduates and the organizations that employ them.
Today, ECPI also stands for the core principles that guide the University’s path: Excellence, Commitment, Professionalism, and Innovation. And for nearly half a century, ECPI has provided employment services to more than 3,800 different employers, some of which are among America’s largest, including AT & T Government Solutions, Computer Sciences Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Cox Communications, General Dynamics, Rolls-Royce, Hewlett-Packard, Sentara Healthcare, Boeing, Verizon, STIHL, Harris IT, Northrup Grumman, Canon Information Technology Services, and L-3 Communications. The University’s Career Services Department also provides comprehensive support to students and employers alike, including assistance with resumes, internships/externships, job search strategies, and on-site interviews.
