Tools Massage Therapy School

Massage therapy school could take anywhere from months to years, but it takes only twenty one days to form a habit.  Because of this, it is practically impossible to make it through training without becoming addicted to some aspects of massage.  In that spirit, here are the top ten tools you won't be able to live without after going to massage therapy school:

10. Aromatic Scrubs

A good scrub can make any facial truly incredible.  With salt and sugar-based scrubs, there is also the added benefit of organic ingredients, allowing the scrub to clear not only your skin, but also your mind through subtle aromatherapy.  You probably discovered your favorite scrub within the first few weeks of facials, and bought it on impulse—you are most definitely not alone!

9. Thumpers

Every day, massage therapists are incorporating these machines into their massages, using them to supplement traditional techniques.  If you haven't already, you will likely be graced by a Thumper massage at some point in your career.

8. Paraffin Wax

A person's first paraffin dip is life-changing in a number of ways.  Paraffin is to lotion what an IV is to water, infusing your skin with moisture, and leaving it supple and hydrated within only a few minutes.  In addition to being a moisturizing miracle, the heat from the therapy can also be used to treat joint and muscle ailments, such as arthritis.

7. Hydrocollators

6. Music

At first, almost everyone finds nature sounds and "Zen" music relatively gimmicky—however, it truly does grow on you over time. You may even end up having a few tracks on your everyday playlists. The reality is that listening to a few relaxing tracks really can make your day better.

5. Essential Oils

Regardless of your opinion when you first began your program, you will undoubtedly end up believing in essential oils.  With a different scent for every emotional ailment, from relaxing lavender to uplifting lemon, these oils quickly become a staple in your day-to-day life.  They also make great additions to massages, acting as both a friction reducer and a medicinal treatment.

4. Cold Stones

cold stonesThe first experience with cold stone therapy is always skeptical—you worry that the rocks will be too cold, will hurt, or will just feel weird. The reality is, though, that someone placing chilled stones on your back is a far cry from your sibling slipping ice down your shirt as children. The sensation is overwhelmingly pleasant, particularly when the massage therapist alternates between hot and cold, a technique which is said to remove lactic acid from around the muscle tissue.

3. Hot Stones

Hot stones are lovely in a slightly different way than cold stones. The warmth more immediately releases tension in the muscles and spreads smoothly through the body. The warm stones used in the treatment feel like a concentrated form of the first ray of sunshine after a long winter—even the most neglected parts of your back suddenly experience a warm release which is immediately addicting.

2. Warm Towels

1. Lotions & Oils

To say that you can't live without lotion or oil might sound like an exaggeration, but after using them every day, it won’t be a surprise if you feel this way!  Don't worry. You will have reason to use luxurious lotions and oils every day for the rest of your career—they’re is not going anywhere.
