ECPI University Student Team Impresses at Dominion Enterprises Hackathon

Three times a year, Dominion Enterprises hosts a hackathon. If you're not familiar with the event, it draws teams of enterprising college students from across the Hampton Roads region to go head-to-head in an app development competition. Hosted at Dominion Enterprises headquarters over the course of two days, teams are challenged to develop an app that improves the life or work of a particular target audience. This year, that audience was the students themselves.

Each year, ECPI University has been honored to receive an invitation. This month, ten teams from ECPI University, William & Mary, Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, and Tidewater Community College were challenged to create an app to enhance the modern student experience.

The ECPI University Team (Web Development majors Stephanie Zachariasen, Ebony Williams, and Amber Kinsey, along with Business Management major Vianney Romero and Software Development major Johnathan Hofler) created an app they call Crescendo, a free-to-use service to help students find special discounts just for them. The app is designed to allow easy access to local business owners who can add themselves to the database with geographical and topical sorting tools to help students find the discounts they are looking for quickly.

One of Dominion's hackathon goals is to retain top talent in the Hampton Roads area by reaching out to the community and local universities while creating a fun, innovative place to work. Each Hackathon is organized by Dominion Enterprises TTAG (Technology Talent Acquisition Group). While these events are designed to enhance recruiting and retention, the real benefits manifest themselves in team collaboration, learning, and experimental development fun.
