Gerry White, Dean of Academic Technology at ECPI University, recently sat down with Chandler Nunnally on Coast Live to discuss ECPI’s 60 years of innovation in higher education. Coast Live is a weekday lifestyle program on WTKR News 3 that highlights local people, businesses, and innovations across Hampton Roads.
White shared how ECPI continues to lead in technology education and prepare students for the careers of tomorrow.
ECPI began in 1966 as the Electronic Computer Programming Institute, when “computers filled whole rooms.” It has since evolved into the East Coast Polytechnic Institute, reflecting the university’s growth and expanded mission. Today, “polytechnic” represents ECPI’s commitment to providing a many-skilled education, from technology, IT, and cybersecurity to health sciences and culinary arts.
A Curriculum That Keeps Pace
White emphasized ECPI’s strong partnerships with regional employers in industries such as defense, shipbuilding, and engineering. These connections ensure that the curriculum evolves with the needs of today’s workforce. ECPI’s leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) education further reflects that goal.
While most institutions are still early in AI integration, ECPI has already started incorporating AI learning into 35 courses across its programs.
During the recent Open House, visitors toured ECPI’s labs, watched live demonstrations from faculty and students, and explored how the university’s hands-on approach helps graduates hit the ground running.
