Founded in Norfolk, Virginia in 1966, ECPI University demonstrated early on its commitment to forward-thinking, market-based curriculum, being among the first to offer classes in the growing field of computer programming. As a result of our history in technology, ECPI stands for East Coast Polytechnic Institute.

From that point forward, ECPI University has pursued a path of sustained growth based on addressing the needs of students and employers while playing a key role in the mid-Atlantic’s economic development.
ECPI quickly established a reputation for providing high-quality instruction in certificate and diploma programs, while integrating industry equipment and teaching the computer applications and software most in demand by employers. Classes were small, and faculty had industry experience, academic credentials, and teaching ability. Successful student outcomes, including high graduation rates and program-related employment, were considered of primary importance. Since that time, ECPI University has built its reputation as an institution focused on modern curriculum. Because employer’s needs change with the times, ECPI’s leadership has always been mindful of this when designing its programs. University program directors and faculty members have maintained valuable relationships with industry professionals to ensure the University meets the needs of both graduates and the organizations that employ them.
Today, ECPI also stands for the core principles that guide the University’s path: Excellence, Commitment, Professionalism, and Innovation. And for nearly half a century, ECPI has provided employment services to more than 3,800 different employers, some of which are among America’s largest, including AT & T Government Solutions, Computer Sciences Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Cox Communications, General Dynamics, Rolls-Royce, Hewlett-Packard, Sentara Healthcare, Boeing, Verizon, STIHL, Harris IT, Northrup Grumman, Canon Information Technology Services, and L-3 Communications. The University’s Career Services Department also provides comprehensive support to students and employers alike, including assistance with resumes, internships/externships, job search strategies, and on-site interviews.
