Hacking is Becoming a Real Problem: What Can You Do? | ECPI University

Kosovan Pleads Guilty to Hacking U.S. Military

A 22-year-old native of Kosovo is the latest cyber terrorist to be found guilty of hacking U.S. government computers. In doing so, Ardit Ferizi obtained the personal data of more than 1,300 U.S. government and military personnel which he later turned over to the Islamic State group.

According to a report from the Associated Press, he began by hacking the records of a private company which included names, email passwords, and phone numbers of tens of thousands of customers. He then sorted through the data to identify email addresses that ended in .gov or .mil.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, this is the first time in which a defendant has been convicted of both cyber hacking and terrorism. "Ferizi endangered the lives of over 1,000 Americans," said Dana Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. "Cyber terrorism has become an increasingly prevalent and serious threat here in America, both to individuals and businesses. However, cyber terrorists are no different from other terrorists: No matter where they hide, we will track them down and seek to bring them to the United States to face justice."

To make that happen, the U.S. government needs well-educated cyber and network security professionals. Many of them will work in and around Washington DC where ECPI University has its Northern Virginia campus, which offers a highly-regarded Cyber and Network Security program.

At ECPI University, classroom instruction is augmented with hands-on learning using technology typically found in the cyber and network security workplace. Students can learn how to create and build networks in the Windows, CISCO, and UNIX environments; and both design and implement network security plans, to keep hackers at bay and networks secure.
