Manufacturing Jobs Expand in North Carolina

Porter’s Fabrication has announced that it will expand operations, opening up a new $3.75 million plant in Cleveland County, North Carolina, just outside of Charlotte. In a recently-released article in the Charlotte Business Journal, it’s reported that the new facility will bring 44 new jobs to the region. Porter’s Fabrication manufactures fabricated metal parts, along with a wide range of fabrication services, including:

  • Robotic welding
  • Custom CNC machining and milling
  • Custom laser cutting
  • Custom press brake forming
  • Value engineering and design
  • MIG and TIG welding
  • Custom plasma cutting
  • Custom metal fabrication
  • Industrial coating

In addition to the new Cleveland County plant, the company also has facilities in Sumter, South Carolina; Lynchburg, Virginia; Gastonia, North Carolina; and Bessemer City, North Carolina where it is headquartered.

Take one look at the company’s website, and you will notice that like most manufacturing sectors, metal fabrication has become highly automated. Robots and advanced automation systems now do much of the work and requires a team of professionals capable of handling programming, maintenance, and repairs.

The skills needed for these kind of jobs primarily involve computer and information systems, electronics, and mechanical engineering. At ECPI University and its Charlotte campus, you can acquire the skills to compete for these type of jobs through our Electronics Engineering Technology and Mechatronics programs.

If you want to specialize, consider a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology. Through our hands-on program, you could learn how to:

  • Use testing and measuring instruments to acquire data, analyze problems, and design a system or process
  • Work with circuits, semi-conductors, and microcontrollers
  • Identify, analyze and solve technical problems
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage engineering technology projects
  • Analyze and implement systems containing hardware and software components

If you want to become skilled in all areas related to advanced manufacturing, you can choose our Mechatronics program. It blends the three facets of production – computers, electronics, and mechanical operations – into one academic discipline. Your Mechatronics studies will focus on such areas as:

  • Applied Mechanics
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Testing and Measuring Instruments
  • Computer Hardware and Software
  • Programmable Controllers
  • Analog/Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Computer Programming Networks
  • Automation and Control Systems
  • Microcontrollers
  • Materials Science

Not only are these programs designed in consultation with industry professionals, they are also offered in ECPI University’s accelerated, year-round format. That means that you could earn your Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or Mechatronics in just 2.5 years or an Associate degree in 1.5 years.

Technology is allowing our country to compete with cheap foreign labor, which means manufacturing jobs are coming back to America. If you want to be a part of this exciting profession, contact ECPI University’s Charlotte campus today!
