the green accounting movement and your careerSaving the natural resources that surround us brings to mind sunshine, green spaces, cute and furry critters, and waves breaking against pristine coastlines. Many idealistic people begin the search for the perfect career thinking about how they can make an impact on the lives around them, and saving the environment is often at the top of the list.

Careers that are focused on the well-being of our planet are becoming very popular. One career path to think about is accounting. Yes, the image of a drab bookkeeper or a stuffy accountant might not be the first thing you think about, but an accountant is not just about numbers in a spreadsheet. Green accounting is a movement filled with meaningful careers that positively impact the planet. So what is green accounting?

The Green Accounting Movement

This subset of accounting takes into consideration the impact of environmental costs when calculating the financial results of operations. The green movement has been around for quite a while now, but the need for specialized accountants dealing with these issues is a recent development, and an important one.

The world of business and industry is ruled by profit and loss, and its reputation for the ruthless pursuit of growth at the expense of others seems at odds with the lofty goals of the typical environmentalist. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Running out of raw materials and skilled employees can cause any business to go into the red. Without sustainability, and the protection of our natural resources, most endeavors will be doomed by uncertainty, fines for unsound environmental practices, and the loss of competitive edge as their "tree-hugging" competitors reap the profits of sustainability and longevity.

Governments and businesses are being urged by the World Bank to examine data and assess risk with projects using green accounting methods. The impact a new landfill could have on a local community's water resources, or the soil erosion of opening a new shopping mall is now an important part of business. This career path is a great way for an individual to impact the community around them.

What This Work Entails

  • Alongside the usual work of an accountant, these individuals factor in resource management and environmental impact. Local resources may diminish or harm the health of the community. Having accurate data ensures profitability and the health of local populations.
  • Work not only on financial reporting, but on sustainability reporting. Ann Brockett, an assurance leader in sustainability at Ernst & Young states, "Now that sustainability has become a business imperative, we can bring all our core competencies and experience in accounting, assurance, and corporate reporting to bear on sustainability issues as well."
  • Manage and report accurate data that will impact the business to shareholders and management in order for the best decisions to be made in regards to the business, government, and community.

Your Career In Green Accounting

Initially, learning traditional accounting methods is of paramount importance, as these will be used extensively. While you are still a student, there are other things you can do to learn about this growing field.

  • Educate yourself about environmental issues and our natural resources, and how they are linked to the economy. The financial impact on business and individuals is key. Read all that you can online as well as other resources readily available to you.
  • Take elective courses that focus on sustainability and the environment.
  • Volunteer for an organization that's primary focus is on our natural resources; it not only looks great on your resume, you will learn about the issues.
  • Read sustainability reports from major companies that are producing them. These are the types of businesses you will want to work for, so learn as much as possible from them.

Students interested in the environment, our impact on the planet, and the impact of business and communities on our natural resources have a wide open field of opportunities. Corporate social responsibility is a huge issue, and while most people do not think of accounting when saving the planet, it could be one of the most important fields to consider.  The world is focusing more and more on energy, climate change, and renewable energy sources, and a career in green accounting is a wonderful way to make a positive impact.
