Bamberg County Announces Expansion

Bamberg County Manufacturer Announces Expansion

Masonite International has announced that it will expand its existing operations in Bamberg County, South Carolina. Nestled almost half way between Charleston, SC and Columbia, SC, Masonite is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of decorative interior doors and entry door systems, the company reports that it will add an additional shift which will create 50 new jobs. With a wide range of building materials, frames, and stain kits, Masonite International has more than 70 locations around the world, with 37 sites operating in the United States.

Like most large manufacturers, Masonite’s operations have changed greatly through the years. Production facilities have become highly-automated and now require workers with high-level skills and education. Advanced manufacturers typically look for people who have studied electronics, mechanical engineering technology, computers systems, or a combination of the three which is known as Mechatronics.

Hiring managers in South Carolina won’t have to look very far from their Bamberg County location to find qualified recent graduates. A short distance to the north is ECPI University’s Columbia, SC campus and a little to the east, the ECPI University's Charleston, SC campus.

Both campuses offer programs in Electronics Engineering Technology which includes targeted coursework in:

  • Circuits and Semiconductors
  • Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Data Acquisition and Control Systems
  • Computer Programming and Networks
  • Microcontrollers
  • Logic and design
  • Network routing and switching

ECPI University’s hands-on learning environment can prepare graduates to:

  • Identify, analyze, and solve technical problems
  • Use testing and measuring instruments to acquire data, analyze problems, and design a system or process
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage engineering technology projects
  • Analyze and implement systems containing hardware and software components

The Charleston, SC campus offers a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology which can prepare graduates to troubleshoot robotic machinery, programmable controllers, and integrated systems. In addition to the material covered in the electronics engineering program, Mechatronics includes core curriculum in:

  • Applied Mechanics
  • Programmable Controllers
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Testing and Measuring Instruments
  • Computer Hardware and Software
  • Materials Science
  • Automation and Control Systems

Both the Electronics Engineering Technology and Mechatronics programs are offered in ECPI University’s accelerated, year-round format. That means students could earn their Bachelor of Science degree in as little as 2.5 years.

Technology and automation have allowed America to become globally competitive once again within the manufacturing sector. It’s also creating tremendous opportunities for people willing to go to school to learn the skills needed for these jobs. How big is this opportunity?  A study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute projects that over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely need to be filled. However, because there are not enough people available who possess the required skills, about 2 million of these jobs will go unfilled.
