Charlotte Technology Companies Making a Splash in North Carolina

By now, it’s pretty clear. Charlotte’s tech sector is no passing fad. In 2017, the Charlotte Chamber reported that the city, home to one of the ECPI University campuses, is ranked number one as a Tech Momentum Market for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

And when it comes to advanced manufacturing, the Chamber data indicates that the region’s manufacturing businesses employ nearly 144,000 people. In fact, they have an estimated $40.8 billion impact on the 16-county Charlotte region. In just one day last year alone, three manufacturing companies announced plans for growth and expansion that led to a nearly $73 million investment and 639 new jobs.

Just recently, two more companies have made big announcements. According to a news report in the Charlotte Business Journal, auto parts maker Meritor Inc. will invest $7.8 million to expand its York plant, a project that will create 26 new jobs for the South Carolina community just across the state line from Charlotte. The company plans to open two new production lines to manufacture air disc brake calipers and housings. "South Carolina's robust manufacturing sector continues to be invaluable to our economy and I look forward to watching Meritor continue to thrive here for many years to come," said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.

The other big announcement came from Ernst & Young, which plans to invest $8.2 million to develop one of its EY wavespace centers in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, creating 375 new jobs. The Charlotte Business Journal reports that this center will employ people in areas such as forensic investigation, dispute data analytics, digital development, data analytics, and robotics.

Both the IT and advanced manufacturing sectors are growing, but they are also struggling to find skilled workers. That’s why ECPI University is such an important role in helping grow the local economy. At our Charlotte campus, students can earn degrees in areas of study that are directly aligned with technology.

Today’s advanced manufacturing employers rely heavily on robotics and other automated systems to operate at peak efficiency. That’s why our Mechatronics program is designed to help students learn about electronics, mechanical engineering technology, and computer systems. As for IT, the Charlotte campus offers programs in Cloud Computing and Cyber and Network Security.
