Congrats to our 2017 Graduates!

It’s all been leading up to this moment. The long nights and early mornings. The tests, the quizzes, the research papers. The hot water crust pastries, the duck rillettes, the baker’s math; all of it adding up to one delicious event: Graduation. On Friday, May 19, 2017, the 2017 graduates of Culinary Institute of Virginia walked across the stage at the Sandler Center and collected their diplomas in front of friends, family, and CIV faculty and staff. 

Before the graduates got lined up to enter the auditorium, they were treated to exquisite appetizers, desserts, and drinks in the lobby. All made and served by CIV, of course! As they took photos with family members and adjusted their tassels or embroidered chefs whites, some graduates talked about their plans for after they received their diplomas.

Chris Hutchinson: "Right now I’m waiting to get results from a job interview with Disney. I’m supposed to find out today.” (He found out later that day he was hired!)

Mayumi Owens: “After graduation I plan to explore my dreams! I also want to work toward starting a business.”

When asked about their favorite part of their education, many students were in agreement that the teaching staff were simply the best.

“The teaching staff really made a difference for me," said Culinary arts graduate Myron Holloman. "Ms. Cook helped me out a lot in intro to ala carte class. Every time I struggled she would be there to lend a hand.”

Baking and pastry arts graduate Jada-Samya Gaines agreed: “My favorite thing about Culinary Institute of Virginia was that the teachers are very supportive. Tim Bostic was my favorite.”

When it was time to begin, the graduates were lined up in an orderly fashion and they began their march into the Sandler Center’s auditorium. Cheers and shouts rang out as family and friends saw their graduate taking their seat. As the commencement ceremony began, all of the graduates’ big dreams and future plans were under one roof for one last time.
