Cyber Security Career Path: What do You Need to Know?

Cyber security is in the news today more than ever. Odds are, some major story relating to cyber security has made headlines in recent weeks, and more such stories are sure to come. Whether it's government data security, major corporate leaks, or viruses spreading across personal computers, there is no doubt that cyber security is a very hot topic.

Wondering how to get started in this fascinating yet complex field? Read on.

You don't have to be a tech expert to study cyber security

You might think you have to have the knowledge of a tech prodigy character from a TV show in order to get into cyber security. However, even if you have absolutely no prior understanding of programming or coding, it's never too late to start learning! TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), HTML, coding, and programming are all essentially languages that anyone can learn if they put the time and effort into it.

No one is born a tech expert, after all. Everyone learns, and they all learn the same way: with hands-on experience. Working with these programs in a stress-free classroom setting is a great way to start on your path toward a future in cyber security, no matter how much or little experience you have with computers.

Education is vital to your future

Just as you have to work hard to learn the basics, you also should consider degree programs that can help you get ahead. A relevant degree can help validate your skills and assure employers you will be able to perform the tasks they will be requiring. While some cyber security experts are self-taught, it can take years to reach a level of proficiency and experience required for most cybersecurity work. The quickest path to a future in cybersecurity is a degree program from an accredited institution.

Experience matters

As with any industry, prior professional experience can go a long way toward helping you find cyber security opportunities. If you're just getting started in this field and need to add some work to your resume, there are a few ways to gain marketable experience.

Try shopping your talents to small businesses in your area. You could create a business account and some simple ads on social media for as little as $20, to promote your services within your area. Small business owners can sometimes underestimate the risk of having their data stolen compared to big businesses, which makes them a popular target for cyber criminals.

Offer these local business owners an evaluation of their cyber security systems. Help them make the right choices to improve their security for their price range. Encourage them to recommend you to fellow small business owners or leave a positive review on your new business account. Don't forget to add this valuable real-world experience to your resume!

Getting certified is a must

Another great way to gain experience is by earning additional certifications. Getting appropriate certification is an absolute must for serious cyber security professionals. Certifications prove that you have all the knowledge required to do your job well, and demonstrate your commitment to expertise in your field.

Organizations that offer certification for cyber security include CompTIA and EC Council. CompTIA grants certification for knowledge of a wide range of cyber security disciplines. EC Council specializes in certifying "ethical hackers", or cyber security experts who evaluate a company's cyber security system as a hacker might, in order to locate and repair vulnerabilities that other technicians might miss.
