Sometimes all you need is a push, and for Lisa Betancourt that push came from her physician. In March 2010 she was diagnosed with a chronic illness that, if ignored, could result in decreased muscle use or even complete loss of muscle function. Unwilling to accept that fate, she got moving—or more accurately she got Zumba-ing.

Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends international music with exercise. Lisa began the Zumba exercise program two to three times a week the month after her doctor’s visit. Immediately she noticed a decrease in pain, fatigue, stress and insomnia with increased energy. Couple that with a forty pound weight loss and she was hooked. In September, she received her instructor license and two short months later started teaching Zumba at Broadway Dance Academy in Virginia Beach. “I feel great and am told I look great,” says Lisa “I’m happy to help others feel the same.”

As an MCI employee for nearly five years, she encourages her co-workers to join her by offering a $10 discount to the monthly membership fee for unlimited classes. For those who would like to sample a class, Lisa has offered a complimentary class to ECPI University employees in the Hampton Roads area. “Zumba is for every skill and fitness level,” says Lisa, “but like all new exercise programs it is best to get physician approval and to take things slow at first.”

Lisa Betancourt is a Registered Nurse and teaches acute care classes for the practical nursing department with MCI in Virginia Beach.
