ECPI University’s Newport News Campus Celebrates Community Day

ECPI University celebrated Community Day on September 24, 2016 at its Newport News campus. From 10am until 2pm, ECPI University joined with many different community members to bring a fantastic event to the ECPI University campus. Whether your interests were learning about cyber security or you just wanted a complimentary chair massage from one of the massage therapy students, there was a little something for everyone.

The Newport News Fire Department sent over two firetrucks and several knowledgeable and helpful firefighters who showed atendees the engines. Allowing children to take a seat behind the big wheel, they explained what it was like to drive a truck and respond to an emergency.

From the Newport News Police Department, there were several officers on hand to answer questions and demonstrate some of the vehicles they use every day while on duty. ECPI University’s criminal justice students had a chance to chat with the people who do the jobs they’re studying for.

Also present was a very special guest; one of the K9s from the police department. This highly-trained dog, clad in a black vest, showed off his skills as he followed all of his trainer’s commands perfectly.

Another fun part of the day was the chance to go upstairs to the building’s second and third floor to get chair massages from some of the ECPI University massage therapy students. These cheerful students appreciated the chance to practice their craft on the public to help them gain some valuable hands on experience.

Downstairs was a cybersecurity lecture lead by instructor Larry Watlington. He went through some different ways hackers and other dubious characters attempt to steal your valuable information online and also how to protect yourself while surfing the web.

But it wasn’t all business. There was plenty of fun to be had as well. A bounce house for the kids was set up, a friendly bunny from The Bunny Hutch was there, and in a separate tent, children could get temporary glitter tattoos. Poor Boys Burgers was also present with their food truck to make sure there were delicious burgers for anyone who got hungry.
