Manufacturing Jobs Coming Back in Orange County Virginia

With more than 1,500 employees at 29 sites across the world, Lohmann Specialty Coatings is a leader in its industry. Now, it’s expanding with a new manufacturing facility in Orange County, Virginia, just outside of Richmond. The company currently manufactures adhesive bonding materials for custom coating of adhesives, slit rolls, double-sided tapes, and precision die-cutting. In its new $6.7 million dollar plant, it will increase capacity to include fabricating and specialty converting, creating 56 new jobs.

“I am thrilled that Lohmann Specialty Coatings will expand manufacturing capacity and add new jobs to its workforce,” says Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. “Advanced manufacturing is clearly alive and well in the Commonwealth, and growing this sector is a vital part of our ongoing success in building a new Virginia economy.”

Lohmann President Steve De Jong says he hopes to break ground by the middle of 2016 and have the building completed by March 2017. Although pleased with the Orange County site, he says he is concerned about finding enough qualified applicants to staff the new facility, adding that he would like to see it develop into a three-shift, seven-day-a-week operation.

Mr. De Jong will have to look no further than just a short distance to the east, where the ECPI University’s Innsbrook and the ECPI University Moorefield Richmond locations offer degrees in Mechatronics and Electronics Engineering Technology. Graduates with both of these degrees are well-suited for today’s advanced manufacturing environment.

ECPI University’s Electronics Engineering Technology program is ideal for critical thinkers who enjoy working with their hands, putting things together, and integrating multiple systems. Engineering technologists play a critical role, serving as a nexus between engineers and technicians. From conception to design, development, testing and production, they are essential to the production process. Here are just some of things graduates can learn about:

  • Data Acquisition and Control Systems
  • Computer Programming and Networks
  • Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Microcontrollers
  • Network routing and switching
  • Logic and design
  • Circuits and Semiconductors

ECPI University’s Mechatronics program blends all three aspects of manufacturing into one degree: computer information systems, electronics, and mechanical engineering. Through this program, students can learn how to develop and troubleshoot robotics, programmable controllers, and integrated systems. Skills in the Mechatronics field can be applied in a range of areas, including maintenance and repair, installation, quality assurance, and research and development. Classes include study in:

  • Programmable Controllers
  • Testing and Measuring Instruments
  • Computer Hardware and Software
  • Materials Science
  • Analog/Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Automation and Control Systems
  • Computer Programming Networks
  • Microcontrollers
  • Applied Mechanics
