Military and Veterans Education Award for ECPI University
Honor Marks 7 Straight Years on Military Times List
Most know it as Best for Vets. This year, it changed to Best Colleges. No matter the name, being recognized by Military Times as one the nation’s best colleges for military and veteran students is a tremendous honor.
This marks the seventh straight year ECPI University has been selected for this honor. The Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 rankings factor in the results of the publisher’s annual survey, a comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement.
Best Colleges 2018 is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many variables that determine academic success among military and veteran students. More than 600 colleges and universities participated this year, with ECPI University ranking number two in the nation among career and technical colleges, a category that includes community colleges and four-year career-focused colleges and universities.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for our commitment to skill-based education,” says ECPI University Executive Director of Military Education Bob Larned. “In today’s highly-technical job market, employers need people who can do the job with little or no training. That’s nothing new for ECPI University. We’ve has been producing those kind of graduates for more than half a century.”
Of the hundreds of schools that applied this year, fewer than half received the Military Times Best: Colleges designation. “Only the best made the cut," said George Altman, the Military Times editor in charge of the rankings. The survey requires colleges and universities to meticulously document a tremendous array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties; and to describe the veteran culture on a campus. Military Times also factors in data from the Veterans Affairs and Defense Departments, as well as three Education Department sources: the IPEDS Data Center, College Scorecard data and the Cohort Default Rate Database.
But data doesn’t tell the whole story. To get a sense of what makes ECPI University special, you need to hear from a graduate, someone like William Moreau. When the recently-retired Navy veteran arrived at our Virginia Beach campus a few years ago, he was determined, yet a bit apprehensive about returning to school and making the transition to civilian life.
So, he set three goals – earn his Bachelor’s degree in Network Security, then a Master’s, and finally, get his first job in his chosen profession. He’s now achieved all three of those goals and was recently promoted by the company that hired him after graduation.
He credits ECPI University’s military-friendly environment for steadily guiding him through the process. “There are so many faculty members who are vets, and just about everyone I dealt with just seemed to ‘get it.’ They really seem to know just what we need and when we need it.”
