Take a Lead Role in the Fight against Cyber-Terror

Earlier this fall, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe issued a cybersecurity call to arms. At a Cyber Physical Systems Summit held at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia, Governor McAuliffe revealed the state had identified approximately 53 million cyber-attacks and stopped 47,000 instances of malware, but warned that there are simply not enough qualified cyber and network security professionals available to meet the ongoing threat. With that in mind, he is asking educators to fill the gap and produce more graduates in cyber and network security.

In response, ECPI University is now offering a Master of Science in Cybersecurity degree program at its Northern Virginia campus in Manassas. This program has been designed to prepare students to play a leading role in IT Security and is focused on providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to manage the processes used to secure information systems and technology at the enterprise and individual levels. Curriculum is based primarily on the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security program requirements for designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense. Specifically, students can:

  • Use virtualization and storage technologies that provide hands-on experience with cybersecurity tools, techniques, and practices
  • Learn how to secure critical infrastructure
  • Participate in real-world case studies and practice with globally accessible hands-on security lab equipment
  • Experience classes designed to prepare them for advanced cybersecurity certification examinations such as Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Systems Administration and Network Security (SANS), and Chief Information Security Officer (C:CISO)

The need for cyber and network security professionals is tremendous. According to Symantec’s 2016 Threat Report, there was a record-setting total of nine mega-breaches last year, and the reported number of exposed identities jumped to 429 million. Moreover, it found that:

  • Spear-phishing campaigns targeting employees increased 55%
  • Vulnerabilities were found in 3/4 of all websites
  • Ransomware increased 35%

Not surprisingly, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that demand for information security analysts is also on the rise. Consequently, the need for computer and information systems managers is growing as well, with employment of computer and information systems managers projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. What’s more, the median annual wage for computer and information systems managers was $131,600 as of May 2015.
