Orlando Nursing Graduate Named National Finalist for Nursing Student of the Year

Sara Innocent, a nursing graduate from ECPI University's Orlando campus, was recently named one of three national finalists for Nursing Student of the Year by The Nurses Magazine.

The Nurses Magazine is a publication dedicated to celebrating nurses and recognizing their contributions to healthcare, with a focus on professional achievements, leadership, and patient care.

The recognition came during the organization's 2nd Annual Symposium & Awards, held in Orlando, Florida. For Sara, a first-generation college student and student parent, it was especially meaningful.

How was Sara selected as a national finalist?

Sara was named a Top 3 finalist after her mentor nominated her for the award. Professors, former supervisors, coworkers, family members, and friends also submitted stories about her nursing school journey, describing her leadership and commitment to serving others.

"What made it even more special was knowing that people from different parts of my life saw those same qualities in me," Sara said.

At the symposium, Sara had the opportunity to connect with nursing professionals from across the country, including nurse practitioners and nursing entrepreneurs. Hearing about their experiences gave her a broader view of the opportunities available in the field, particularly beyond bedside care.

Before pursuing nursing, Sara spent more than 10 years working in education. She recently completed her nursing degree while raising her son and plans to continue her education, with the goal of becoming a nursing professor in the future.

How does ECPI University support students at different stages of their nursing career?

ECPI University offers accelerated nursing programs both for students entering the field and nurses looking to continue their education. Outside of their clinical experiences, students can also get involved in campus and community activities. Nursing students at the Orlando campus recently joined the Lake Mary Fire Department for a community outreach event where they put their skills to work outside the classroom.

For nurses who want to take the next step in their careers, online programs offer a way to continue their education while working. From entering the nursing profession to pursuing advanced practice roles, students can explore different pathways to grow their nursing careers based on their professional goals.
