Textile Jobs Returning to North Carolina

ECPI University Charlotte Campus Offers Programs to Prepare for Advanced Manufacturing Positions

Once one of North Carolina’s largest industries, textile manufacturing, had all but disappeared. Fortunately, those jobs are beginning to return, thanks to advanced automation technology and robotics. Most recently, two textile companies from Taiwan and Lilesville are creating a new company that is projected to bring 100 jobs to Anson County during the next three years with an expected annual payroll of $2.8 million.

In a news report from the Charlotte Business Journal, the new company – King Charles Industries – announced it would spend $12.5 million to build a new plant filled with advanced textile machinery. “We are excited about the opportunity to build a new business with the latest in technology in Anson County,” says King Charles Industries Chairman Chuck Horne.

In that report, N.C. Commerce Secretary John Skvarla says a high-tech company like King Charles fits well with the state's manufacturing tradition. “With its innovation and global nature, King Charles Industries is a 21st century take on one of our state’s traditional manufacturing industries,” Skvarla says.

Advanced technology used in the equipment in this new plant requires employees with the skills to program, maintain, and repair it when trouble arises. At ECPI University and its nearby Charlotte campus, there are programs designed to prepare graduates to do just that.

ECPI University’s Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) program is led by seasoned professionals, faculty members who possess academic credentials supported by real-world experience. Targeted coursework includes:

  • Analog and Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Data Acquisition and Control Systems
  • Computer Hardware and Software
  • Computer Programming and Networks

The EET program leads to a very specific career track, while ECPI University’s Mechatronics program is designed to create advanced manufacturing professionals who have an understanding of the full compendium of what makes today’s modern facilities work. People who pursue this path can be selected for management as they can become versed in all aspects of operations. In addition to EET courses, studies in the Mechatronics program also focus on core areas such as:

  • Applied Mechanics
  • Programmable Controllers
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Testing and Measuring Instruments
  • Materials Science
  • Automation and Control Systems
  • Microcontrollers
