It’s been said that competition breeds success. That certainly appears to be the case with the Charleston Tech sector. According to a recently-published report from the Post and Courier, the winners in this competition seem to be employees who work in the technology field can now command higher salaries.

The report states that while tech workers have often made less than their counterparts in other parts of the country, employers in Charleston may be beginning to pay national wages. Citing the Charleston Digital Corridor's annual survey of the region's tech wages, tech workers are making an average of $88,066 a year, compared to $65,980 last year. Moreover, nearly three-quarters of those surveyed grew their staff during the past year.

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce has estimated that software will be the Lowcountry's fastest-growing industry through 2020, posting 20 percent job growth over five years. "The industry is growing. It's stabilizing. Wages are strong," said Ernest Andrade, director of the Digital Corridor in the Post and Courier article.  "This wage, in my opinion, is truly reflective of all the pieces coming together and efforts that are being made by the companies themselves to advance their profitability."

Andrade says there are companies locating to Charleston from outside the state, as well as a number of home-grown start-ups. In fact, he says seven companies – including six from outside the Charleston area – have arrived in the last three months.
