Healthcare Workers' Options Expanding in Charlotte, NC

ECPI University Charlotte Campus Stands Ready with New Graduates

It’s being called a “game-changing” donation, a $150 million dollar gift from the Leon Levine Foundation to the Carolinas Healthcare System. Earlier in April, the healthcare provider announced that the money will be used to improve and expand cancer care in the Charlotte region. It’s just one of two major health initiatives that could mean more opportunities in this part of North Carolina.

With an expected start date of early next year, Carolinas Healthcare System (now Atrium Health) plans to build a 260,000-square-foot, seven-story cancer care complex that will be connected to its existing cancer institute, as well as a second outpatient center. The goal is to provide patients with greater access to treatment, specialists, clinical trials, and support services closer to where they live. The plan also includes $20 million to develop a 32-bed hematologic unit at Carolinas Medical Center. In total, the Center sees about 15,000 patients annually.

Also during the month of April, the new Charlotte Veterans Affairs Health Care Center opened its doors. At nearly 300,000 square-feet, it will offer out-patient primary care and specialty services such as cardiology, neurology, dental and oncology. This new facility is more than four times the size of the former Charlotte Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. Moreover, the old site employed only about 250 full- and part-time employees while the new center has the potential to hire up to 700 people in the future.

In both facilities, health professionals of all types will be required to provide optimal care. No doubt, a fair number of positions will include registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and medical assistants.  ECPI University and its Charlotte, NC campus have long been a leader in helping prepare people for each of those professions.

Through our Nursing (RN) program, ECPI University strives to equip students with the most current knowledge and skills needed to meet the prevention, health maintenance, health promotion and restorative needs of the patient. Our skills-based laboratory environment provides students with a realistic setting in which to learn both the art and science of nursing with a focus on the application of theory to clinical practice. Likewise, ECPI University’s Practical Nursing program helps prepare its graduates to become an important part of the healthcare team, working under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses.

Many people find that Medical Assisting provides the ideal entry point to a future in healthcare. Through ECPI University’s hands-on program, students can prepare to perform clinical procedures such as taking vital signs, performing laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, as well as administering medications and assisting with patient exams.

All three of these programs are offered in an accelerated environment, meaning you can finish school a lot sooner. Through our year-round schedule, you can earn your associate degree in as little as 1.5 years.
