MPA775 Pediatrics

Course Description: This course will consist of a 4-week rotation in pediatric medicine to practice the principles of pediatric medicine in a clinical working environment under the direct supervision of a clinical preceptor. Students will refine the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom and lab setting and utilize them in a clinical setting. Students will practice performing the history and physical exam, ordering, and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing treatment plans for the diversity of patients and conditions encountered in clinical practice. Upon successful course completion, students will demonstrate knowledge of how a PA functions in the pediatric medicine setting and entry level knowledge of diseases and well-states encountered in pediatric medicine.

Course Description: This course introduces students to breakfast and lunch cookery. Students will learn how to poach, grill, bake, and roast. The principles of basic nutrition and plate presentation will be introduced and demonstrated. Emphasis will be placed on breakfast cookery, sandwiches, salads, dressings, and contemporary sauces, as well as pasta and grain cookery. Topics include emulsification, heat transfer, protein coagulation, and nutritionally sound recipe modifications. Students will be able to discuss and demonstrate their learning of basic culinary nutritional concepts utilizing the above cooking techniques.

MPA530 Laboratory Medicine

Course Description: This course will provide an in-depth review of laboratory medicine. Students will learn medical microbiology, hematology, genetic testing, forensics, and clinical chemistry. Students will use clinical case discussions and eHospital modules to reinforce the lab medicine concepts. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to choose the best test for evaluation and determine the appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan. Students will also be able to judiciously create a treatment plan to avoid unfavorable/unnecessary tests, procedures, or treatments.

Course Description: This course will allow students to participate in lectures, grand rounds style conferences, and lab work with other healthcare students. Students will create evaluation and management plans as part of a healthcare team that focuses on providing quality, safe care using evidence-based practices as leaders of a healthcare team.
