Course Description: This course will consist of a 4-week supervised clinical practice experience (SCPE) in internal medicine to practice the principles of internal medicine in a clinical working environment under the direct supervision of a clinical preceptor. Students will refine the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom and lab setting and utilize them in a clinical setting. Students will practice performing the history and physical exam, ordering, and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing treatment plans for the diversity of patients and conditions encountered in clinical practice. Upon successful course completion, students will demonstrate knowledge of how a PA functions in the internal medicine setting and entry level knowledge of diseases and well-states encountered in internal medicine.

Students will learn to take and communicate a focused and comprehensive patient history and perform a physical exam of the body's major systems focusing this term on the heart exam, lung exam, abdominal exam, skin exam, and the overall general assessment of patients. Upon successful course completion, students will demonstrate how to take a history, perform a physical exam, and communicate those findings to other healthcare team members in writing and verbally.

MPA790 Graduate Seminar

Course Description: This course will be a culmination of the program where students review the knowledge and skills for entry level practice and ensure that all program competencies have been achieved. Students will present the required Capstone Project. Students will also prepare for the PANCE with a review course. Upon successful course completion, students will be prepared to take the national certification examination and practice medicine as a physician assistant.

MPA655 Fundamentals of Surgery and Emergency Medicine

Course Description: This course will address the common emergent and surgical conditions encountered in clinical practice. Students will identify techniques for evaluating and managing patients with surgical and emergent conditions. Students will explore selecting appropriate evaluation, diagnosis, and management plans in the pre-hospital and hospital emergency room setting, pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative management of patients, the pre-surgical clearance exam, and critical care/trauma medicine. Upon successful course completion, students will be able to apply the knowledge gained in this course to recognize and manage emergent and surgical conditions.

Course Description: This course will present an introduction to the PA profession, including the history of the profession, advocacy, prevention of medical errors, patient advocacy, patient safety, quality improvement, risk management, credentialing, laws & regulations regarding professional practice and conduct, licensure & certification, the PA relationship with the physician & other health care providers, policy issues that affect practice and professional organizations. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to recognize, describe and debate issues of ethics and professionalism common to PA clinical practice.
