ECPI University Produces College Graduates with Hands-On Experience

There’s a daily battle being waged against hackers and cyber-criminals, according to Heather Engel, a partner with Sera-Brynn, a global Cybersecurity Audit and Advisory firm based in Suffolk, Virginia. Ranked #1 in Virginia, #7 in the United States, and #10 worldwide on the Cybersecurity 500 list, the company helps businesses and defense contractors comply with security regulations, respond to incidents, and assess and mitigate risk.

While the company continues to amass an impressive list of clients, one of its greatest challenges is attracting and retaining top talent. Sera-Brynn is not alone. That’s why Engel is working closely with Virginia’s Secretary of Technology, Karen Jackson, to encourage more people to pursue degrees in Cyber and Network Security.

According to a recent report by the Daily Press, Virginia has the second-highest number of cyber-related job postings in the nation. "Cybersecurity's never going to go away," said Jackson in the report. "What cyber touches is pretty much everything. We need a talented workforce in order to accept the challenge that's in front of us and make sure Virginia is well positioned to grab the lion's share of that work."

Heather Engel recently opened a second office for Sera-Brynn in Newport News, Virginia. According to the Daily Press report, when she hires new employees, she’s not just looking for people with degrees. She also wants hands-on experience. Talk with most any career services advisor at ECPI University, and they will tell you that Engel is not alone. Employers are in the trenches every day fending off cyber-attacks. They don’t always have time to train people.

Most prefer people who can do the job from day one – which is why ECPI University graduates are so highly regarded.

At ECPI University and its Newport News campus, students can learn from faculty who’ve worked in the real world. They don’t spend endless hours contemplating theory. They’re focused on the real-world application of cyber and network security principles. Their classroom experience is reinforced with hands-on instruction, using the same kind of technology found in the workplace. Simulating actual scenarios, ECPI University students have the opportunity to create and build networks in Windows, CISCO, and UNIX environments, and design and implement network security plans that can keep hackers at bay and networks secure.
