How Can You Become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?

You will need to have good interpersonal skills, be aware of infection control techniques, assist patients physically when needed and be handle medical emergencies.

In order to pursue a career as a sonographer, you will receive Associate of Applied Sciences in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Upon completion of your classroom and lab education, you will be required to pass the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer exam, which includes registry examination in Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation (SPI), and the Abdomen (AB) and Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN). The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification test in Sonography is another certification available. Certification by either ARDMS or the ARRT is required for employment.

After graduation, you will have the skills to work in many different venues including:

  • Hospitals and laboratories settings
  • Medical imaging centers
  • Outpatient care mobile imaging locations
  • Primary care locations
  • Physicians’ offices
