China Hengshi Foundation Co. Ltd, a manufacturer of fiberglass fabric, has announced it will invest $11.1 million to develop a manufacturing operation in Richland County, South Carolina, creating 48 new jobs. In an article published by the Columbia Regional Business Report, China Hengshi Foundation’s chairman said the company will open the 111,000-square-foot facility by the end of this year.

China Hengshi specializes in the research, development, and production of fiber-weaving products. Its products are primarily used in wind turbine blades. They are also utilized in space flight, aviation, construction, transportation, and environmental protection.

"Today marks another milestone for our company as we are starting our first South Carolina operations,” said China Hengshi Chairman Zhang Yuqiang in a statement. “We are very excited about the future of our company and are thrilled that we can support the local community as we launch this new facility."

This is the second major investment by China Hengshi in the past year. In 2016, the company announced plans to build a $500 million manufacturing facility in southeast Columbia, which is expected to create up to 800 new jobs. "South Carolina has long been a strong player in both manufacturing and foreign direct investment, and this tremendous $11.1 million investment only reinforces that notion,” said South Carolina Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt in the Columbia Regional Business Report article.

One reason why South Carolina has been successful is the state’s workforce. Because school’s like ECPI University offer programs related to advanced manufacturing, the state is able to offer skilled workers. For example, at ECPI University’s Columbia campus, you can study Electronics Engineering Technology (EET), which has direct applications to manufacturing.

Unlike years past, today’s advanced manufacturers rely more on technology and less on human labor. However, the people who do work in these facilities must be highly skilled, able to work with robotics and automated systems, all of which incorporate a wide range of electronic technology. By enrolling in ECPI University’s EET program, you can prepare to work in these kind of environments, developing skills in such areas as:

  • Analog and Digital Electronics
  • Data Acquisition and Control Systems
  • Testing and Measurement Instruments
  • Computer Hardware and Software Components
  • Computer Network Fundamentals

And because ECPI University offers a year-round, accelerated schedule, you can complete your studies and earn an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics Engineering Technology in as little as 1.5 years.
