The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by the year 2020; there will be a shortage of around 800,000 nurses.

There are many benefits to studying in the nursing field and pursuing a career as a nurse. The job is associated with a high level of personal satisfaction, is flexible enough and allows you to work in different locations. However, before enrolling in a nursing program, you should be aware of the different options available to you.

The duration of an accelerated nursing program

There are a number of nursing programs that are designed to equip the next generation of nurses with the necessary knowledge and practical experience. This not only promotes the profession but also improves healthcare, health and wellness around the world.

Today, prospective nursing students have the option of taking accelerated learning models. These learning programs are designed to reduce the time it takes for students to qualify and graduate. The learning models feature smaller class sizes, new terms every five weeks and focus on year-round curriculum that eliminates breaks.

With the accelerated nursing program, students could graduate with a Practical Nursing Diploma (LPN) in about 15 months. It might take you as little as 18 months to graduate with an Associate’s of Applied Science in Nursing, commonly known as ASN. Students who already have their ASN and are currently working as a registered nurse (RN) may be able to proceed to pursue and successfully complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). With such credentials, the degree program will take about 12 months before the students graduate.

A Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN) will be beneficial to nurses who want to take their careers to the next level. Students who pursue the nursing master’s will advance their knowledge and skills and could graduate in as little as 15 months.

What to expect during the degree programs

Enrolling in the various nursing programs will do more than just equip you with the skills you need. You will develop professional qualities such as advocacy, integrity, and a caring attitude. When examining programs, you should always look for schools where you will receive adequate academic support and a hands-on approach to the profession.

It also goes without saying that students who pursue these programs can benefit from accelerated education, a factor that will reduce the period it takes for them to qualify and graduate. Clinical technology supports the various curriculum so that students can learn from the real-life situations they are likely to face throughout their careers.

While accelerated education will not be easy, students have access to faculty members who are ready to offer academic support. The small class sizes can go a long way in ensuring that learners get the personalized attention they need. Students can also benefit from clinical rotations and career services as they seek to launch their careers.

The advantage of finishing early

The obvious benefit to finishing your degree early is that when your peers at traditional schools are still in class, you’re out job hunting and interviewing for your first nursing position. Beyond that, accelerated programs work well with some students’ love of fast-paced learning and desire to move forward instead of taking long breaks in between classes. Accelerated programs are often available online, hybrid, or at night, allowing working students or those with families or other obligations to still go to school and keep  up with their daily lives.
