IT Manager Responsibilities: What Will I Be in Charge Of?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in computer and information technology are expected to grow by 12% through the year 2024. IT (information technology) managers are one of the most important positions in any business or organization that relies on computers for their daily operations. But what exactly does an IT manager do?

General Duties for IT Managers

Primarily, an IT manager is responsible for maintaining a computer network. Every organization has different needs. While the size, structure, and industry of an organization affect its IT requirements, there are some basic expectations.

  • Install network elements. This can include desktop and laptop computers, PDAs, smartphones, GPS-based vehicle monitoring units, and other electronic interfaces used to access the network. This includes creating user accounts and granting access to programs or software based on security clearance.
  • Communicate with other departments to determine the needs of the business. This might mean helping to choose which hardware to purchase and talking to coworkers about how they use technology in their work day. In this instance, a manager would probably work closely with a member of the organization’s financial team.
  • Maintain the network. Software updates, upgrades, and troubleshooting are some of the most important functions of an IT manager. These actions are integral to protecting the network from financially catastrophic failures and slowdowns.
  • Secure the network. More than just downloading virus software, network security by itself can be a full-time job. Securing a network includes vetting employees for access to secure or confidential information, protecting information from outside threats like hackers, and monitoring employee use of internet-connected company equipment.

Computers are everywhere. IT managers can use their skills in almost any industry imaginable. Governments, colleges, medical facilities, retail and manufacturing companies, and banks are just a few of the more popular career choices.

Education Requirements for IT Managers

Most employers require IT manager candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to computer science. Whether you choose a traditional 4-year college or an accelerated learning program, your educational program should give the knowledge and practical skills to get the job done.

  • Web design and computer programming
  • Mathematics and theory
  • Building and maintaining information databases
  • Building and maintaining a multi-device network
  • Business management and ethics
  • Management theory and practice as it relates to information technology
  • Strategy and critical thinking skills that support technological activities

The Importance of Education in IT Management

Your training program is the beginning of achieving your goals as an IT professional. Programs that combine traditional classroom instruction with supervised hands-on training is the best way to prepare yourself for a career in information technology. A solid educational foundation from an accredited program also puts you ahead of your job-hunting competition.
