ECPI Virginia Beach students trek 60 miles in the snow

North Carolina Couple's Commitment to Education Weathers the Storm

Snowstorm…What Snow Storm?

Ask Corey and Pamika Sylvester what life is all about and they will likely respond with the word “commitment.” They are committed to their three children, to each other, and to their education. They demonstrate it every day when the alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m. The Sylvester’s live in Hertford, North Carolina, more than 60 miles from ECPI University in Virginia Beach. Monday through Thursday every week, they arrive on campus one to two hours early so they are fully prepared for class.

So, when this season's snowstorms hit, the only thought that came to mind was how much earlier they would have to get up in the morning. “I didn’t even think about not coming,” says Pamika. “I can’t afford to miss a day. We cover a lot of material and I don’t want to miss any of it!”

Corey is in full agreement. “She is so committed to everything she does,” he says. “Her dedication is really what drives me.”

Pamika is studying to be a nurse and Corey is in the Network Security program. She has always been in the healthcare field, and he spent 11 years in the Army before enrolling at ECPI University. Both know what it means to be “Essential Personnel.” If those words sound familiar, it’s because those are the terms are used during weather-related closing announcements.

Nearly all of the programs offered at ECPI University are designed to prepare students for this “Essential Personnel” category, including healthcare, technology, and criminal justice. What’s more, missing one class during a five-week term means missing a great deal of material. That’s something the Sylvesters fully appreciate.

“I was really attracted to the accelerated pace of the program, but I was also a little scared,” she says. “I knew what I was getting into, and I know we have to stick with it if we are going to succeed. I know it’s worth it, because we’ll earn our degrees a whole lot faster.”

While the Sylvesters are focused on graduation day, they’re looking to earn one other distinction in addition to their degrees. They plan of being in that small and elite group that receives an additional honor for perfect attendance.
