Should I Get a Degree in Web Development? | ECPI University

Should I get a Degree in Web Development?

Every graduate of a Web Development degree program was once someone wondering if they should take the plunge and start earning their degree? You might even have a lot of questions or hesitations about going back to school.

Here are some common worries and fears a prospective Web Development student might have before beginning their journey. And if you have any of these concerns, don’t worry, you are not alone!

I’m Not That Tech-Savvy

If you live in a cave with no running water or electricity, there’s a good chance you’re not very tech-savvy. But in our world of smartphones, iPads, programmable televisions, and thermostats, you’re already technologically more advanced than any generation before. You’ve got basic internet skills, and that’s more than enough! However, computer and internet abilities are not what’s most important in web development.

The most valuable abilities for web development can be nurtured and developed in the right classroom setting. “Coding, editing video, design — it really is just the tip of the iceberg,” says Mark Surman, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation. Surman says important skills that comprise a well-rounded “internet kind of person” include:

  • A willingness to participate
  • Critical thinking
  • The ability to collaborate

I Want to be a Web Developer, but I’m More of a ‘People Person’

Perfect! As you learn more about web development, you will see an overall theme in what employers want:

  • Ability to focus
  • Collaborators
  • Culturally sensitive and understanding of diversity
  • Customer-service oriented for good client relationships
  • Good communicators
  • Team players
  • Knowledgeable about business trends and demands

These are all people person qualities! As a web developer, you must be able to interpret what your clients need are and understand what would work best for their companies. Once you understand their goals, you will design a website or page that seeks to accomplish their mission for increased sales, better customer interaction, or brand development, for example.

I Can’t Stop Working to Go To School

It’s a common problem: You want to earn more money and leave your dead-end job for a rewarding career as a website developer, but you can’t be a traditional student because you may be the head of your household, a single parent, or depend on your job to pay basic living expenses. The solution is to find a college or school of advanced learning that understands your situation and offers:

  • Affordable financing that works with your lifestyle
  • Day or evening campus courses
  • Online classes
  • Year-round classes

Non-traditional students are becoming more the norm than the exception to the rule!

What Do Web Developers Earn?

Should I Major in Web Development?

Average income for web developers depends on the industry and the company’s geographic location, but the Bureau of Labor and Statistics puts the median (half earn more; half earn less) annual income at $81,430. Web developers work for many different industries and employers, and that can impact earning potential, too. For example, the following industries’ mean salaries include:

Other information services $68,520
Publishing industries (except Internet) 68,020
Computer systems design and related services 67,960
Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations 63,380
Educational services; state, local, and private 61,560
