As health professions go, few can beat Surgical Technologist for its daily challenges – and rewards. As members of the surgical team, they are vital to the success of each procedure. If you’re not familiar with this profession, here’s what they do to help make each surgery smooth, precise, and well-planned:

  • Set up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, equipment, and solutions
  • Assemble and check equipment
  • Position and drape patients on the operating table
  • Hold and pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons
  • Hold retractors, cutting sutures
  • Count sponges, needles and supplies
  • Operate lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment used during procedures

Like many healthcare professions, demand for Surgical Technologists is on the rise. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. That is certainly supported by the demand in Northern Virginia. Do a quick Google search and you’ll find that job site Indeed lists 80 new jobs in Fairfax County alone.

For so many of our graduates, this profession is as much a calling as it is a career path. Surgical Technicians save lives,” says Northern Virginia Campus Surgical Technology Department Head Christy Hampton. “It’s them and the surgeon in the operating room. It’s an extremely rewarding job that takes a special person to do it. You must put others before self. It can be a fairly emotional position. Surgical Technicians are with patients at their most vulnerable state. Surgeries can’t happen without them. Being a surgical technician is a huge amount of responsibility, incredibly rewarding, and life changing.”
