The Charlotte Business Journal is reporting that the Robert Bosch Tool Corp’s advanced manufacturing facility in Lincolnton, North Carolina is planning to invest $13.3 million dollars to expand operations. With about 180 people currently working at the plant, the company expects to add more than 50 new employees during the expansion.

"Increasing our Lincolnton capabilities is an exciting opportunity," David Lee, director of packaging at the Bosch facility, said in a news release. "It shows the company's confidence in our capabilities and associates to support this business."

A global corporation based in Germany, the company expects to spend most of its investment to expand the production of cutting tools at the plant. In 2015, Bosch invested $455 million in North America, up from $274 million in the previous year. It says 18 percent of its total sales in 2015 came from the North American region.

Bosch is just one of many companies expanding operation or opening up all-new production facilities, many of which are equipped with a wide range of automated machinery and robotics. This type of automation allows them to compete with cheap labor overseas and while there may not be as many people working in these plants, most of the people who are there are highly skilled in electronics, mechanical engineering technology, and computer information systems – the three key components that power modern manufacturing.

Skills in these areas are rarely learned on-the-job. To get hired, you usually have to have some fairly extensive skills-based education. At ECPI University and its Charlotte campus, you could develop these skills by enrolling in the Mechatronics program which focuses on real-world application of engineering principles. Coursework covers such areas as:

  • Programmable Controllers
  • Testing and measuring instruments.
  • Computer Hardware and Software
  • Analog/Digital Electronics and Communications
  • Automation and Control Systems
  • Computer Programming and Networks
  • Microcontrollers
  • Applied Mechanics
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Materials Science

Upon graduation, Mechatronic graduates could find employment working as:

  • Electrical/Computer Engineering Technologists
  • Project Coordinators
  • Industrial Technicians
  • Field Service Technicians
  • Computer Engineering Technicians
  • Industrial Engineers
  • Product Engineers
  • Project Managers

If this sounds like a degree you might want to pursue, completing your education may not take as long as you think. Through ECPI University’s year-round, accelerated program, you can earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology with a concentration in Mechatronics in just 2.5 years.
