Some hobbies never really stay just hobbies. "I started gaming about 15 years ago," said Stephen Arthur, an e-sports coach at ECPI University. Like the old saying, "Do what you love", Arthur turned it into a career at ECPI University in Virginia Beach. "We're one of the only colleges in the southeast to actually award scholarships to e-sports players," he said.

June 22, 2018 - ECPI to field area's first eSports collegiate team

The university is fielding a collegiate level eSports team that will compete against 88 other colleges in the National Association of Collegiate eSports. The first day of tryouts were held at ECPI’s Virginia Beach campus Friday, and more than 70 students showed up to compete for a spot.

June 6, 2018 - ECPI is joining the eSports wave, adding video games as a varsity sport

“We’re bringing it because it’s pretty much what our student population has asked for,” said team manager Mike Glover. “We’ve tried for years to find a collegiate sport that our students would participate in.” ECPI does not offer any other sports and is largely a commuter school. It enrolls about 10,000 students across more than a dozen campuses.

ECPI University has announced that it will join the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE), becoming the first in Hampton Roads to do so and competing in eSports against 87 other colleges and universities across the nation.
