Nursing School Applications: What do I Need to Know?

Nursing School Applications: What do I Need to Know?

When it comes to fields that offer a blend of both emotional and practical benefits, very few can match the nursing field. Unfortunately, just like other careers, not everyone is suited for this job. It takes an intelligent, compassionate, and strong person to take on the ills of this world with determination and passion, and to work tirelessly to maintain the well-being of their patients.

Requirements to Join a Nursing School

Each school will have a different set of requirements for their nursing students. Be sure to read each school’s requirements to make sure you’re eligible. Nothing is worse than compiling all of your materials and finding out something excludes you from even applying. Schools commonly chose to look at grades, test scores, and previous college or military experience.

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

To qualify for a nursing degree program, you should have a high school diploma or equivalent, and produce proof of a Hepatitis B vaccination. Your high school, average grade points, will also be considered before you are admitted into the nursing degree program, and you will need a minimum GPA (grade point average) of 2.5.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The BSN degree program will also prepare you for a career as a RN. There are different options for completing a BSN degree program including the traditional 4-year program, a RN-to-BSN program (if you are already a registered nurse), and an accelerated program.

To qualify for a BSN program, you should meet the minimum GPA requirements. However, in some cases, you may also have to complete foundational coursework before you are allowed to enroll in the BSN program.

Tips on How to Streamline the Application Process and Join Nursing School

Despite nursing school being more competitive than ever, there are schools that can accommodate your needs. However, it’s important that you carefully check all the application requirements and prepare a strong application.

While filling your application for a nursing program, it’s important that you pay close attention to all the application guidelines and supplemental materials that will help articulate yourself effectively throughout the process. Start by paying strict attention to the deadlines listed on the school website and consider submitting your application earlier to reinforce your commitment and prove to the school that you’re well-prepared and reliable. Submitting your application early will also allow more time for the program personnel to contact you before the deadline in case there is any supplemental application information that is needed.

What You Should Keep in Mind When Preparing your Application Materials

  • Consider attending nursing information sessions: Nursing information sessions are provided by most schools to prospective students that want to learn more about available nursing degree programs. During these sessions, you’ll meet important members of the faculty, learn more about the steps you should take to enroll in the program, and also ask any questions that you may have. Although this isn’t a requirement for you to join a nursing school, it could help you familiarize yourself with the program and prepare yourself for enrollment.
  • Do related volunteer work: This can be either at your community clinic or a hospital. Volunteering at such health centers can provide valuable hands-on experience which will look great on your application. Additionally, you can discover at an early stage whether nursing is the right career for you.
  • Take the TEAS: The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) test is a basic requirement for enrolling at any nursing school. These are standardized exams for those interested in joining a nursing school.
  • Prepare yourself for the entrance interview: After you submit your application, take the necessary tests, and the school reviews your information, they may reach out to you. Ensure that your vaccinations are up to date, be prepared for a background check, and be ready to sit down for an interview with high-level faculty or the nursing dean.

Schools do all of this this to ensure that you’re the right candidate for the program, and that their program is right for you. The entrance interview is your chance to shine. Be sure to be professional in your both appearance and demeanor. Let your natural nursing instincts shine through.
