Am I Cut Out for an Accelerated Program?

If you are wondering whether an accelerated nursing program is right for you, the answer is of course, “it depends”. Accelerated programs can be demanding. Classes are year-round, material is given to you at a faster pace. Terms, instead of semesters, last 5 weeks instead of 16.

While this might sound daunting, the benefits could outweigh the sacrifices for you. An accelerated program could see you graduating sooner than your traditional program counterparts and applying for jobs while those in 4-year schools are still in class. Some people also thrive off of the challenge of accelerated classes. The pace can also help those who don't want to take long breaks between material.

What to Expect From Accelerated Programs

Accelerated nursing programs are rigorous, no-nonsense programs, designed for those of you who strive for academic excellence. You can count on spending most of your time attending classes on campus and working together with other students in your class.

However, for those of you who already have an RN, ADN or any other degree for that matter, it will not feel like you are starting college all over again. As soon as classes start, you will hit the ground running. Once you have enrolled in a program, you will go from term to term, without break, until you are done with all classes.

Accelerated nursing programs share the same amount of clinical time, or lab time, as regular BSN programs. The main difference is that you will start lab work earlier than traditional four-year BSN programs.

What Kind of Classes Will I Take in an Accelerated Program?

Prerequisites will depend on several factors, such as the college, the student’s previous degree/experience, etc. In general, you can expect the following classes.

  • Organic chemistry
  • Inorganic chemistry
  • Biology I
  • Nutrition
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Statistics

For a BSN degree, also expect arts and sciences classes to help make you a well-rounded student. Other classes, such as clinicals will come later in your education when you're ready to start dealing with patients.
