Going to College Online? Stay Focused with these Tips! One of the biggest challenges for students going to college online is dealing with motivation. Without the influence of being physically in class, you must depend on self-reliance and discipline to remain focused. While many may view this as a difficult task, much of it is just a matter of adjustment.

In order to really stay motivated, you must actively work to build your concentration. Here are some tips and tricks to stay focused.

Start Out Strong

It’s easy to get caught in a lazy daily routine, especially if a commute isn’t on your morning agenda. Instead of rolling out of bed and straight into your home office in your PJs, take the initiative to start your day off strong. In order to sustain your energy throughout the day, set aside time for morning exercise and make sure to eat breakfast.

Pay Attention to Ergonomics

The importance of ergonomics is a hot topic—and for good reason. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, if ergonomic design is not implemented, unnecessary strain and stress—both physical and mental—can occur. Additionally, experts say that squinting at a computer screen for extended periods of time can cause headaches and make it difficult to focus.

To avoid this needless stress, make sure your workspace is comfortable and that the lighting is adequate. Choose a chair that encourages good posture, and a desk or table that is comfortable and spacious. Set your screen an arm’s length away from your eyes to prevent strain.

Stay Organized

A cluttered, messy workplace only encourages distraction. According to a 2011 report by OfficeMax, 77 percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed believed that office clutter most certainly undermined their productivity and motivation. Luckily for you, decluttering your workspace—and optimizing productivity—is easier than you think. Here are some quick ideas:

  • Organize your cables or reposition your workspace to avoid clutter.
  • Enlarge your workspace or add extra storage.
  • Compartmentalize your office supplies, keeping your most-used materials within reach.

Set a Routine and Have a Plan

When are you most energetic? Do you notice your productivity fluctuating? By establishing an efficient study routine—based entirely around your unique habits—you will be able to optimize your concentration and work when you feel most productive.

Part of having a successful routine rests in daily planning. Every day, make a list of your tasks—on paper or even on a productivity app. When you do start working, cross off items on your list. Setting reasonable time limits will help you work efficiently and eliminate procrastination.

Create Incentives and Take Breaks

Once you establish a routine, consider giving yourself a small reward—a healthy snack, a quick look at a social media profile, or a quick breath of fresh air—when you complete a task. Working towards a tangible incentive introduces variety into your daily routine, and can keep your brain stimulated.

Taking things a step forward, take a 5- to 15-minute break every hour or so to help optimize concentration. If you can, try to do something active. Do some stretches or jumping jacks, or simply take a quick walk around the block. Much like rewarding yourself with small treats, taking breaks helps keep things fresh and prevents you from burning out.
