What Should I Know Before Starting a Database Programming Class?

If you’re preparing for a database programming degree program, here’s some good news: you don’t need any technical expertise before you start. In fact, there are some benefits to coming in without any preconceived notions about your subject matter – you’re giving your instructor a blank slate on which to imprint knowledge. But there are some things that will make you a better student in the long run, and with decades of experience in training industry leaders in your field, we’re adequately prepared to offer a basic outline for student success. Here’s what you need to know before starting a database programming class.

Be comfortable with a little discomfort

Know that you’ll encounter new terminology, visuals, and ideas – all in your first day! It’s to be expected, so embrace it. You, and your classmates, are about to be immersed in a world of ultra-technical knowledge, so get excited! Your first foray into a wild new world is going to be new, and very, very exciting.

Come prepared

Make sure that you have reliable internet access, regular access to a machine capable of supporting your minimum software requirements, and peripherals (keyboard, mouse, and monitor) that make you feel comfortable. If you’re setting up a home office or computer nook in which to work on school assignments and labs, get it ready before your first day of class.

Pre-arrange your schedule

Know when you’ll be leaving school every day, and have some time set aside for studying, test-prep, and homework. Make sure you’ve got coverage for other important elements in your life – have backups for childcare and transportation in particular. If you know in advance that you’ll be out of town, talk to your instructor at the beginning of the term, and ask for help in working around the scheduling conflict. You’ll find that faculty members are willing to work with students who ask for help, and that providing advance notice of conflicts demonstrates your commitment to your course of study.

Brush up on introductory technical skills

Most students of technical fields have a personal interest in the subject matter, and you’re probably no exception. So, take some time to update your skill set. If you need a refresher on operating systems, keyboard shortcuts, or hardware, watch some tutorials. Take advantage of online resources offered by your school and guarantee that you’ll start the term up to date.

Know your advantages

Your school will offer some significant help along the way – learning to utilize it will put you in the best possible position as you move through your program and begin considering options in your chosen career field. Know the location of available computer labs, along with the hardware and software options in those labs.

Be aware of your instructor’s office hours, email address, and times available for personal tutoring, and be willing to ask for additional help outside of class. Know where the IT office is on your campus, and follow up with staff in that office when you have questions about equipment or access. These are the people who will help to guide you through your program and into the working world, so get to know them.

Know your strengths

Are you particularly analytical or adventurous? Excellent with complex mathematics, or adept at solving logic puzzles? Begin your program with some ideas about the skill set that makes you a competitor bent on success in the job market, and focus on those skills as you begin your curriculum. Talk to your instructors and mentors about how to hone those skills into marketable talents.

What are your weaknesses? If you struggle with articulation, take writing and public speaking classes to strengthen that area rather than ignoring it. Are you easily distracted? Work on multiple projects simultaneously and become a multi-tasking powerhouse. This is your education – own it, and develop a skill set that will skyrocket your career.
