There are a lot of factors that go into calculating the cost of attending any college. Tuition is just one of them. In this article we’ll take an in-depth look at what the actual cost to attend ECPI University is and then compare it to some other colleges and universities.
When considering the cost of any college, it’s important to understand the total cost involved in earning a degree and not just tuition. A recent survey by the College Board (Collegedata.com) reports that a moderate college budget for an in-state, public college student for the 2013-2014 academic year, averaged about $22,826.00. Private institutions for the same academic year averaged about $44,750.00.
How to Calculate the Total Cost of Attending College
When calculating the cost of attending any college or university, it’s important to base that calculation on the Net Price of attending that institution and not just the tuition. The Net Price is the total cost of tuition, any fees assessed by the institution, books and materials, transportation fees and housing (room and board) fees. Room and board fees are subjective, but need to be considered in the total cost because some state colleges and universities require freshmen and sophomores to live on campus, so that additional cost becomes mandatory.
What is a Net Price Calculator?
A Net Price Calculator is in most cases, a free online tool that allows a prospective student to estimate the total net price of attending the college or university they are considering. The Net Price calculator should automatically include all additional fees, an estimate for books and supplies and any housing (room and board) costs that may be associated with your education. The federal government now requires most college and universities to have this tool available on their websites.

How Does the Cost of Attending ECPI University Compare With Other Colleges and Universities?
It might surprise you to learn just how affordable ECPI University really is, especially when you factor in our accelerated degree programs that allow you to graduate in as little as 2.5 years. Most other higher education institutions will require a 4 year (or longer) commitment to complete their degree programs.
For the first comparison, let’s look at how ECPI University compares to some other colleges and universities based on total cost for a single academic year (Net Price).
*Note – All cost estimates shown below for any specific college or university, including ECPI University, were based on the institutions own Net Price Calculator (where available) or their published cost and fee schedule, see reference links below.
As you can see, ECPI University is competitively priced for an actual, academic year, based on Net Price cost.
How Does the Total Cost of a 4 Year Degree Compare with the Same Schools?
That’s the real question isn’t it? After all said and done, how much will a 4 year degree (Bachelor’s Degree) actually cost me?
A couple of things to note about these calculations:
- They are based off of each institutions Net Price Calculator (where available) or published pricing document (see reference links below)
- Since ECPI University does not offer room and board, we did not calculate the total cost using room & board as a factor. However, if you attend a college or university that requires you to live on campus, you should add that to the cost above.
- All of these calculations were based on graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering, Technology or Medical field from a Regionally Accredited College or University that has a local campus in Virginia
As you can see, while ECPI University is not the cheapest institution on this list, we certainly should be considered affordable by any measurement! If you also take into account our accelerated degree programs and the fact that you can graduate with Bachelor’s Degree in as little as 2.5 years, and could actually start working in your new career field that much sooner, the value of this investment becomes pretty clear.
The real question though might be this; “Where will you be 2.5 years from the time you start pursuing your degree?” If you choose ECPI University, chances are, you will be working in your field already and gaining valuable experience while earning a good living. If you choose another college or university, you most likely will still be in class for an additional 2-3 years before you graduate and can start your career.
