How Technology is Changing Advanced ManufacturingAdvanced manufacturing is changing the way products are created, and enabling companies to function more competitively. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that advanced manufacturing is being used by companies of all sizes to spur an American industrial revival. Case and point: Elon Musk of Tesla Motors wants to modernize how automobiles are built. But employing these new manufacturing techniques requires skilled technicians.

What is Advanced Manufacturing?

In the document titled President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology Report to the President on Ensuring American Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing, the phrase is defined as a range of activities dependent on using cutting-edge materials and technologies in the physical and biological sciences. The report goes on to say that advanced manufacturing should be applied to existing products as well as emerging new technologies.

Advanced Manufacturing in Practice

The automotive assembly line is often the first thing someone thinks of in relation to “advanced manufacturing.” In practice, the term encompasses robotics, computer aided design, precision engineering, and understanding the growing connectivity of machines.

The Changing Face of the Manufacturing Industry

Area Development’s website reports that advanced manufacturing is being applied from the ground up. Architectural design has to take new technologies into consideration, while manufacturing processes are being streamlined for higher production and reduced waste. As organizations move toward advanced manufacturing, the demand for skilled technicians to design, build and deploy new technologies is going to increase proportionately.  With advanced production, the labor force can be reduced, and the equipment attended to, by skilled technicians either onsite or at remote locations.

Manufacturing in the 21st Century

Advanced manufacturing techniques are being incorporated in many industries, and every success story only encourages other companies to re-establish manufacturing operations here in America. From aerospace to xerography, major companies are looking at advanced manufacturing to reduce costs, meet environmental concerns and keep their customers and investors happy. But each new technology and every innovative application will require people with the right background to make it happen.
