How Long does it take to get a Student Visa?
Many students dream of studying in the United States. An education from an American university can open a wide array of doors around the world and lead to opportunities that may not exist back home.
While many students focus on getting accepted to a university program, it is equally as important to consider the steps that go into the visa process. Failing to do this can mean that you get accepted to the program, but can't attend the classes that can help you succeed.
Verify Eligibility Before You Apply
Students must be accepted at an eligible university. The university must be accredited and in good standing with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). This requirement helps protect students from fraudulent program providers and ensures a higher quality education. Students should start their application process by first asking whether the program qualifies for an F, M, or J category student visa.
Applying to University
Once eligibility is established, international students should complete their university application. Every university has its own application deadline, so students should pay close attention to the deadlines at the school(s) they want to apply to.
Getting the Visa
When you are accepted to the program, the university will enroll you within the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System, also known as SEVIS. At this point, the US government will send you Form DS-160 along with Forms I-20 for an M or J category visa, or a Form DS-2019 for a J visa. These are the forms you need for your visa application and you must complete them and pay the necessary fees as soon as possible.
Getting Your Documents Ready
The US government has different application requirements for citizens of different countries. As such, you will want to check your specific requirements with the US Embassy or Consulate within your country. In general, you will need to have a valid passport, a copy of your acceptance letter, and proof of health status. In your application you will be required to answer questions about your education and work history, your criminal record, any previous travel to the US, and your dates and locations of intended study.
The supporting information you will need can take time to gather. Thus, it is advisable to start gathering it at the same time that you are applying to American universities. This will save you time when you are accepted to your desired program.
Preparing for Your Interview
All international students must schedule and complete an interview as part of their application process. These can be done online, on the phone, or in person depending on the country. The interviewer will go over the application and ask questions about your background and intentions in the United States. It can be nerve wracking, but it's really not that difficult or stressful once the interview gets started.
Mistakes to Avoid
There are four common mistakes that you don't want to make as they can cost you money and possibly disqualify you from studying in the US.
The first mistake is not applying in time. Always give yourself plenty of time to apply. To mitigate this risk, make sure that you apply for the visa 4-6 months before your program is scheduled to start.
The second mistake is not getting all of your documentation together. Always check to ensure that you have all the necessary documents and that you verify before submission that you haven't forgotten everything.
The third mistake is making mistakes on the application itself. Always fill in the information that is requested, don't leave questions blank, and under no circumstances should you ever lie on an application.
Finally, the fourth most common mistake students make is failing to pay the necessary application fees by the scheduled deadlines. These fees must be paid otherwise your application will be returned to you and you will have to start the process over again.
Coming to the United States
Traveling to the US for your program will be an exciting time. However, don't get so caught up in the moment that you forget to bring the necessary paperwork. You will need your passport, SEVIS form (I-20 or DS-019), proof of financial resources, evidence of your status as a student, and 24-hour contact information for the university where you are studying. As you pass through customs, you will need to provide the customs officer with these documents.
