Are Physical Therapist Assistants in Demand?

What is an ABSN Program?

An accelerated Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (ABSN or just BSN) works to prepare students for positions in various nursing settings. Obtaining a BSN through an accelerated training program can be challenging, but you could be graduating in as little as 2.5 years.

What You Will Learn in an Accelerated BSN Program

The coursework in an accelerated BSN program covers the same material as a program offered at a 4-year institution. Like other nursing degrees, these programs present the information and clinical training students need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Successful completion of the NCLEX qualifies nursing students to seek a license to practice from their state board of nursing.

BSN coursework covers nursing care and clinical procedure, general knowledge, and psychology, among other topics. Some of the things you will learn in an accelerated BSN program include:

  • Physiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Anatomy
  • Microbiology
  • Nutrition

Other courses may include exploration of community health issues and maternal or neonatal care.

In addition to lecture-style classes and textbook coursework, accelerated training programs offer hands-on experience to ensure all students are able to proficiently perform nursing duties. A BSN graduate is qualified for specialized fields like surgical nursing, healthcare management, maternity and neonatal care, and critical care.

Accelerated Nursing Programs Overcome Challenges for Great Rewards

Whether you choose a traditional 4-year college or an accelerated program, getting your nursing degree is going to be tough. Both methods take large commitments of time, money, and energy.

There are some important advantages to choosing an accelerated program. The shorter instruction time means you move through the course material with no long breaks to forget what you’ve learned, and you'll finish sooner. These advantages come with some challenges.

Here are some of the traits of successful ABSN graduates:

  • Time Management: When you have to work until 5 and class starts at 5:30, you’re going to need flawless time management skills to make it work.
  • Support Network: Whether you need a babysitter, a friendly ear, or a peer to bounce an idea off of, it’s important to have a group of people to lean on when you need something.
  • Ability to Learn Quickly: Accelerated classes might progress faster than you think, and there’s no time to endlessly review material.
  • Determination: Future BSNs who know this is what they want to do with their lives, and have no doubts about their chosen field. Dig deep and find the same stamina and strength for school that you will use to take care of patients.

While it’s no exaggeration that nursing school is difficult, there are ways to make it through. Here are some tips for success:

  • Make a schedule to include class times, work, and other necessary commitments. Don’t forget to schedule in study time. Post your schedule so friends and family know when you need to concentrate.
  • Have a backup plan for child care, in case there’s a problem with your normal resource.
  • If you are having problems with coursework, talk to your instructor. They are there to help you understand and apply the presented information.
  • Organize a study group with others in your class. Build friendships and help each other succeed.
  • The counselor at your nursing school is available to direct you to community or academic resources to help you reach your goal.

The Right Choice for You

You may be wondering if an accelerated nursing program is right for you. You may have doubts about your ability to manage your time and resources, or your ability to handle the coursework.

Starting something new can be frightening. But you don’t have to do it alone. The instructors, students, and faculty at nursing school are there to guide, inspire, and aid you on your path to nursing proficiency.

An accelerated learning program gives you all the knowledge of a traditional nursing school in less time. If you are a working adult or are just excited to start working as a skilled medical professional, an accelerated program is right for you.
