Nursing Education on Wheels: Inside ECPI University’s Mobile Simulation Lab
A new approach to nursing education is taking shape in Hampton Roads as ECPI University's Mobile Simulation Lab rolls out. The initiative was recently highlighted by WHRO in its coverage of innovative nursing education models.
WHRO is a public media organization serving Hampton Roads with coverage across radio, television, and digital platforms. It reports on education, healthcare, public policy, and community issues that impact the region.
The feature underscores ECPI University’s investment in immersive clinical training and expanded learning opportunities for students.
What is ECPI University’s Mobile Simulation Lab?
ECPI University’s Mobile Simulation Lab is an RV-based clinical training unit that delivers hands-on nursing education throughout Hampton Roads.
Designed to replicate a hospital room environment, the unit features life-size adult manikins and an infant simulator capable of producing heartbeats and pulses. Students use this equipment to practice blood pressure checks, IV insertions, blood draws, and pediatric assessments in a controlled, supervised setting.
The lab supports small-group instruction and allows students, including those in rural communities, to complete required clinical competency validations before beginning clinical rotations. The high-fidelity simulators inside the unit represent a significant investment in immersive training technology.
By extending clinical education beyond campus boundaries, ECPI University is expanding access to essential hands-on skill development and helping to prepare students for real-world patient care.
Why Does Expanding Access to Clinical Training Matter?
Expanding clinical training access helps address regional workforce shortages by creating more pathways for students to enter nursing practice.
WHRO reported that hospitals and clinics across Hampton Roads are facing persistent nursing shortages. By broadening where and how students complete required training components, ECPI University is contributing to the preparation of additional qualified nurses for the region.
The initiative also strengthens community engagement. ECPI University has brought the unit to local high schools and career centers, giving prospective students and community members direct exposure to professional nursing training environments. This visibility can support early interest in healthcare careers and strengthen the future pipeline of nursing professionals.
